Josher
Not my stomping ground - but I assume this is good news? Saturday, January 29, 2011, 07:00 This is Gloucestershire Marston's has Gloucester Quays in sight for new pub venture A BIG name in beer is looking to build a new pub at a key Gloucester site. Wolverhampton-based Marston's Inns and Taverns has bought land at Gloucester Quays for a new boozer. The firm brews beers including Pedigree and Oyster Stout. The company is preparing a planning application for a pub, but an application for approval of reserved matters for an access road to it at Llanthony Wharf has already been submitted by Gloucester Quays LLP. The site is part of a hoarded-off derelict area bound by St Ann Way and the new Sainsbury's store to the south, a Grade I listed stable building in the grounds of Llanthony Priory to the north, Hempsted Lane to the east and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal to the west. Peel Holdings and British Waterways have pumped £400 million into the redevelopment of the quays area, which has seen a designer outlet, Sainsbury's superstore, Gloucestershire College, new homes and the St Ann Way bridge built since 2006. A spokeswoman for the brewing giant, which also makes Banks's, Brakspear, and Wychwood Hobgoblin, confirmed it intends to build there. "Marston's has recently exchanged contracts on the site with owners Peel Holdings, and is preparing to submit a planning application," she said. "The planning application is scheduled to be submitted in the next couple of months." She said Marston's pub proposal is at a very early stage. A name for the pub has not yet been considered. Other pubs in the area include Fosters on the Docks and The Tall Ship. The Inn on the Docks (formerly the Sir Colin Campbell) in Llanthony Road is currently closed but owner Arkells is looking for a new landlord. The Waterfront in Merchants Road, on the other side of the canal from the Marston's site, was a popular live music venue but closed in 1998. Marston's Inns and Taverns already has The Haywain (formerly the Weavers Arms) in Bristol Road, Quedgeley.
