deletedaccount
If the choice was Whitfield or the other two, I think I'd have Whitfield....... MP. me too. I certainly wouldn't spend 95k on some generic looking semi-trad, that's for sure. http://www.theusedboat.co.uk/stock_details.asp?bro_no=684 95k! mental

I agree that for the money, a much better boat could be built from scratch. And that's the problem. It's not worth messing around with.i Edited January 14, 2011 by sociable_hermit

Our basin had a particularly low bridge on the way to the main line. Not sure if it is a standard feature, the boat in question had the ability to "sink" a few inches to reduce air draught. The wheelhouse was very comfortable in bad weather. Tony.

But I bet very claustrophobic and hot in the the summer - one thing I don't like about some of the cruisers we have hired is being enclosed in a wheelhouse on a nice sunny day. There is/was a very similarly styled boat with the same wheelhouse arrangement for sale at N&U at Mercia too. (can't locate it on their site now) Interesting to see that Kittle another oft. discussed boat on here is under offer now too... http://www.theusedboat.co.uk/new/stock_details_new.asp?bro_no=616&address=Mercia

IIRC the price they had paid was approaching £30K less than the asking price here. It's obviously hard to tell from pictures alone, but I really can't see anything that makes that boat worth anything approaching that sum. Although I don't in the least like what they have done to it, I'd much rather have "Dover", (and a fair bit of change!).
Naughty Cal
It would be incredibly boring if everyone enjoyed and like the same things. For what it is worth i quite like Whitfield. It is something out of the ordinary, not your average tin tube. Would i won it, well yes but for a price and certainly not the one it is up for. Im not sure why folks feel the need to laugh at Whitfield. The boat shows that it is possible for NB builders to build something other than your average clonecraft and that stands out from the crowd. That's handy for finding the shopping trolleys and old mattresses thrown off the bridge. I can't see any attraction in being stuck in that wheelhouse watching the world go by through those low windows. Much better to be outside steering. Aqualines to me are very nice smart boats (again a bit too New York appt. for my tastes) - but for me the problem is they get marketed very much in the same way as cars eg the one in question has the 'chrome pack'. 'deluxe engine control panel' etc etc. These often add several hundred if not thousands of pounds to the 'starting from' price you see quoted in the ads. (Amber do the same as we found out when we asked them to quote us for a boat at Crick last year). Come resale time you would IMHO be lucky to re-coup anywhere near what these optional extras have cost you.
Doorman
We all have our own tastes. Vive la difference. As a boat owner, it's not for me, but then my boat is not for others either. Is it any wonder...? Mike P.S. Guest
I want THAT boat ... it's soooooo cute ! There is a great little boat moored on the T&M at Burton at a garden end mooring - about that size but much tidier than that one - the name 'Tig' - must get a pic next time we pass. Strads
I would have thought the broker may fair better trying to sell whitfield to the Thames cruiser "types" and they may find a user that likes/recognises the style of fit out suits them and can stand up againgt the more typical river gin palace, but allow them to access canals when they desire, a cross over craft... re that little tidler, we had one of the same class moored behind us at cropredy year before last,, looked snug, but slept two, and they were able to cook bacon butties on board so not all bad !.. kienik
That's the problem - mobile gay porn set. It's a gay porn palace with stupid windows and a daft cratch cover and impractical controls and lots of unnecessary electronics which will fail. Apart from that its great. Any Need??? tony collins
MJG. But I bet very claustrophobic and hot in the the summer - one thing I don't like about some of the cruisers we have hired is being enclosed in a wheelhouse on a nice sunny day. It had a sliding sunroof, which was fair enough. It was not my choice, but it suited them very well. Edited to add: Good luck trying to sell a narrowboat to the Thames Cruiser lot. Narrowboats are not their favourite boat type to say the least. Take a look at the Thames forum if you dont belive me I did just that and the first post I saw was from a guy who used to post very useful info on here until he was bullied away. sociable_hermit
Any Need??? Not being homophobic, if that's what you mean. There is a design style best described as OTT camp bling, and that's what this is.
Stevethetrain
Whitfield looks like something out of a bond movie,I dont like the slanted windows because I believe they waste valueble wall space. The "problem" with Whitfield is that while it was what the original owners wanted it appears they have'nt planned ahead in as far as what they would do should they wish to sell it. I could get my dream boat made from scratch at half the price and that is why this unique narrowboat will be on the market for some time. Saying that the ultimate test of how good this boat is should be told by how much she was used, if they hardly went near her then I believe that would make her a failed design and a waste of money. My two pence worth.
