Oil Lamps in Back Cabins

Ooh! Diverting the topic - Lou brought this back from a brocante in France - 5 euro. A 'Cricket' spirit stove. Encrusted in filth, cleaned it up and went on Ebay. Only fetched a bit more:

The handle unscrews. The wadding was pretty dusty, hence the yellow flame - just warming up.

You should have posted it here.

That has just made my list of "must haves"

Further to my post about traditional back cabin lamps, I have found a picture which shows a lamp fitted to a "Mr Green's" sconce. It is a GUCCCo butty cabin. I still have the pattern which BCC used and have been talking to Pete at Brenmarl to see if we could do a limited run, will depend on oil lamp aprts availability though.

The "S" is solid bar - probably better than tube for this purpose - which would have to be quite thick wall and would

be difficult to bend so tightly without creasing. The band is a solid ring which I presume was chosen as being the

correct size for the fount (or maybe a fount was found to fit the available brass ring) rather than being strip brazed

up to a suitable size.

It is a lot easier to clean than some of the fancy candle sconces.

You may not find what you want amongst these sites, but they are useful to gain knowledge on what is available with regard to spares and lamps in general.

Base Camp: http://www.base-camp.co.uk/

Stuga Cabana: http://www.hytta.de/

The second are in Dortmund, Germany, and the site can be translated.

The Lamp Guild may also be of interest, an independent and International organisation specialising in the study of liquid fuelled lamps.

The 'Repairs & Restorations' & 'Links' pages may be of use:

I am glad I found this old thread. I had been looking for a replacement chimney for my late mother's oil lamp for more than a decade with no luck. The Stuga-Cabaña web site had an exact replacement for €9, plus €14.90 P&P.  For UK customers, when you place a order on-line, they email you a pro forma invoice for payment by bank transfer or, at a slightly higher cost, PayPal. I don't do on line banking or PayPal, so arranged transfer by SWIFT/IBAN at my local bank branch on18th Aug, and it was delivered, extremely well packed, this morning, 24th Aug. A perfect fit.

Lots of interesting info on their web site, such as the fact that their wick widths are still expressed in terms of lines of the inch of the old French (actually Paris) foot (1 line = 1/12 inch).

I can vouch for David's expertise and his collection of all things to do with lamps. He found me a replacement when I broke mine. :)

Nice to hear from you Jim, and thanks for the compliment. I still have a selection of nice old duplex burners to replace that modern "geenhose heater" burner you have fitted at the moment. Hopefully the historic boat show will be on next year.

Piano sconce comes to mind. They were fitted as a pair either side of the music holder.

This is what I used then took the base off a big lamp and then fitted the top to the sconce
