Great Ouse and canals archive videos

I've just stumbled upon these superb videos on YouTube. Mainly of the River Great Ouse but also some of the canals with working narrowboats in evidence. Highly evocative stuff with good background music too, so have your sound 'on'. Five videos in total from the same source, all good but especially the last four:

Now all we have to do is identify the locations and the boats !

Laurence, this deserves to be a commercial release in your catalogue doesn't it?

Steve

Edited to add that GUCCCo fleet no 70 is 'Perseus' and a boat I've steered many times as a waterbus, but never thought I'd see it carrying cargo.

Yes, It's the Queen Mum at the re-opening ceremony on 11th July 1964.

Questions; which boats are they using?

Could it be the Linda? And the other has distinctive 'snakes' - Nurser boat?

1m:32s in.

Derek

Yes its Linda - the other boat (with the snake) I think is John Humphries' Clevanda the subject of a recent thread.

The continuity on these (admittedly fascinating) films makes The Bargee look spot on.!

Thanks Steve for finding them. Whose the old chap sterring the boat in the Ely Boatman film?

Now that would be telling, but what I would say is watching that one shows some of the scenes (in 2008) which are depicted in the archive movies.

Some questions:

Can anyone identify the butty with Perseus?

Where is the 'warehouse' with cabin cruisers inside? Banham's of Cambridge would be my guess, but a guess is all it would be.

Is that 'Shellfen' the ex Dutch tanker barge being shafted along?

Quite correct, John Humphries built Clevanda in his Lew Ways yard at Cannock and launched it in time for the Stourbridge 1962 Rally where it carried the Mayor. Can be seen on British Pathe 1962 Canal Rally film. Vesta escorted Queen Mother into Bancroft Basin in 1964, see my gallery. It all seems a long time ago.

Looks like it is to me. Latterly of Stretford, Manchester.

I like this particular film: Shellfen, working narrowboats,Jones KL44 mobile crane, Ruston Bucyrus draglines loading narrow gauge railway skips- There were nice bits of kit around in them days. Not sure about Shellfen , but certainly, the rest of it: "Made in England"

Hi Steve,

Real shame its effectivly been "wasted" on you tube, there is so much more that could have been added in. Very rare shots there of Fenland lighters in a train and of the old Stour lighter (of Constable fame). The Queenn mother too at Staratford on the boat steered by Joe Hollinshead. At least people can see it and its not locked away in some filing cabinet like so much stuff is but it would have formed a good basis for a film.

Correction. John Humphries boat at Stourbridge and Stratford was Jasmine which I photographed in his Brownhills yard. It was an all steel boat.

JASMINE - would that be the one I used to see sometimes in Aylesbury in the eighties? It had a huge tug type fender around the bow and a short open deck at the back with stubby rails.

Pictures found;

Distinctive fore end with snakes on the top bend:

AylesburyforeendsLarge.jpg

Only just visible on the right, but distinctive panelling decorated and with scumbled framing:

AylesburyLarge.jpg

These would have been taken sometime during 1987 - 90.

Where is she now?

Do you know the story of JASMINE Max, she's an unusual boat - who built her when and what for? Purely a pleasure craft, or with some other intent originally. I seem to recall a bearded chap at the helm mostly, with an eloquent turn of phrase - not quite 'plum in the mouth' but a bit posh - good sort too.

Jasmine was built in 1961 by John Humphries who was a Director of Lew-Ways fabricators of Farm Gates ,Boat Trailers and childrens toys in their Brownhills yard.. Steel construction, actively participated in Waterway Campaigns. If I knew how to download pictures I could show you it leaving the yard. My children had one of his Go-Carts which had removable wheels to make a winter sledge.

Cheers Max,

PS Theres a section on uploading HERE. Photobucket is another host, it's a free account, and once pictures are uploaded into it, the desired code can be copied and pasted into the reply window. You will not 'see' the picture in that window, just the code. Click 'preview' to check it is as you want it.

One thing to remember, is that if you delete the pictures from the host, they will also be deleted from the forum automatically.

Looks daunting, but practice makes perfect.

Hi Derek,

Im new to this forum and generally not that handy with a computer.

I tried posting pictures of the boat I have bought that I think is the Jasmine in question.

iv started a new thread using some of the info from this thread to try and find some information.

It's titled

Jasmine, BCN Brownhills, Any information or history?

the pictures should be there.
Cheers
