'Bedflex' supplied by the Marine Bedding Company

During the last five years we often had a problem with our mattress feeling damp or 'hot and sweaty' in the Summer months. The previous owner of 'Alnwick' had drilled holes on the 22mm ply bed base and had also installed a thick mesh mat beneath the mattress in an attempt to allow it to breath - neither solution appears to have worked satisfactorily and, as a result the bottom layer of foam was beginning to show signs of rotting due to dampness.

Our bed 'ole is under the tug deck which has limited head room so we needed a solution which would not further reduce the available 'sitting-up' height.

We consulted Peter at the Marine Bedding Company in Hampshire and he recommended 'Bedflex' - a Belgian product designed for use in luxury yachts. It was expensive at £145 but we bought it and installed it. To prevent it from 'riding up', or otherwise moving about longitudinally, we fixed it in place with by a single screw through to an appropriately sized bearer at the head or top and two simple screwed hooks and eyes at the bottom.

The photograph below shows the 'Bedflex' after having been cut to size and fitted in our bed 'ole:

That was now more than six weeks ago and I am pleased to confirm that we are entirely satisfied with the results. The rubber blocks and special beech wood laminate slats move gently, under the mattress, as we sleep and, as a result of this movement, they pump air in and out of the shallow space beneath the mattress. This movement of air keeps the mattress dry, fresh and 'aired'. The result being a comfortable night's sleep that is, in every way, far superior to what we have been putting up with during the last five years.

Neither Jane or I have any connection with the Marine Bedding Company other than being extremely satisfied customers. Having said that, we feel confident that we can sing their praises and recommend 'Bedflex' to anyone who may have their bed laid on a solid wood, ply or steel base. The website is:
