Chertsey
Well not much comment there. I fully intend to give it a try and see how I go on. It is mainly the spares situation that worries me I assume if anything goes wrong then I cannot just nip to Halfords. Well, IF it goes wrong and IF you can't get the spares, you could always think about replacing the engine at that point, and you won't have lost anything. Radio-Ga-Ga
Personaly I wouldn't want the hassle often encountered with old/vintage engines. Having said that I'm very glad that others are prepared to run and restore them, I love the sound and many look manificent. If I'd bought a boat with one? I'd run it, till I loved or hated it. It is mainly the spares situation that worries me I assume if anything goes wrong then I cannot just nip to Halfords. The first job is to finish fitting the alternator where the old dynamo was. I am going to use a Lucas A127 70Amp I think a smaller alternator pully will be required to get a good spin at low revs. At least the old Lucas is approaching vintage and is usually very reliable. I also have a few little water leaks to sort and then a good clean and polish. I am also thinking the three foot long gear lever will have to be altered to something more neat. I will keep you posted how it goes and might even publish some vintage engine porn for you engineers. Steve Can I have some photos, sent under plain wrapping of couse Ps wise decision keeping it. There are pockets of spares but you would be unlucky to break anything unique to the engine, and it will be so lowly stressed that wear and tear should be minimal. Gibbo
The other thing to consider is that classic engines are usually quite simple and manufactured using (in terms relative to today) rather primitive techniques. This means that when spares cannot be obtained they can usually be made quite simply by a local engineering firm.

Ohhhh... silly me. Is there a butty called Chertsey? I only caught the back end name as it went through a bridge and I'd have sworn the butty was called Chertsey. Alice No1
Don't talk him out of it. I was going to give him a tenner for the old Dorman, just to help out you understand... Richard If I am walking on the canal bank or driving my own boat I never give a boat with a modern engine a second glance .But if its got an old Gardner Lister Ruston Hornsby or Russel Newbury or a Dorman its the difference good old England or rubbish.ATB Geoff

The Bagdad Boatman (waits)
When we first had our barge 62ft 8 inch by 13ft 6 inch, we had bought it blind and didn't know how good it was. An old L&L short boat man Joe Briggs came on board and after saying it was a nice boat and went well he pulled the gearbox into neutral and said it takes three times it's own length to stop. He brought the barge to a dead stop inches from the swing bridge landing stage. I said that is the way I am going to drive this boat. No more reverse gear and plan ahead more. BEngo
Does any one know where I can purchase a cylinder head gasket for a Dorman 2DSM marine engine. Thanks Geoff Peel. Have a look around the usual ex-MoD suppliers, try Classic Engine Spares,(They have a website but it is not much use and their 'new', as opposed to 'new old stock' gaskets apear to come from the link that follows) or Gaskets to go. The guys in the link get good feedback on the stationary engine forums. I have no connection with either. N

by'eck
Any ideas where I can locate a cylinder head gasket for a Dorman 2DSM Thanks Geoff Peel. I had a couple of gaskets made by link he is very much a 'Fred in the Shed' character but produced a good gasket from the original I sent him Pinched from another Dorman thread - assuming that Richard Edwards I mentioned in an earlier post couldn't help.
