Having completed my Chemotherapy treatment eight weks ago, my Cysto Prostatectomy and formation of neo Bladder operation is scheduled for 7am on Thursday. (I can hear you all googling to see what that means!) I have to report at 2pm on Wednesday to be prepared and will not be able to eat anything for 24 hours before the operation, which will last something between four and seven hours depending on how well it all goes.

When I wake up, I will (to quote the Urology Nurse) be lit up like a Christmas tree with tubes and wires emerging from various parts of my body. They say I will not be in pain, but time will tell. One thing they will be requiring me to do almost immediately is to take short excercise walks, this apparently helps to prevent Deep Vein Thrombosis, and helps to stimulate the bowel into action, apparently it has a tendancy to go to sleep after being "messed about with" which can lead to violent vomiting. It all sounds absolutely delightful doesn't it?

I have kept fairly quiet about my progress over the past few weeks, mainly because ther has been little to report. It took about six weeks for the effects of the chemo to wear off, and the past two weeks have kept me fully occupied doing all those jobs which I was too tired to do before, and which needed to be completed before my next long period of enforced rest and recuperation. One good thing is that my hair has started to re-grow, so I will hopefully return to my usual untidy hairy appearance in the near future.

Unlike my friend Anagram Fincher, I will not have access to the internet during my ten or so days stay in Hospital, so my posting will cease on Wednesday morning, and not re-start for some while after I get back home, but I will try and let you knopw how things go, Jan may post a progress report if there is anything interesting happening.

Although my operation is a couple of weeks later than originally planned (my decision - not the hopspital's) I still hope to be fit enough to get to Braunston on the boat at the end of June for the Historic Boat Show, but may be calling in one or two offers of help with mooring on the puddlebanks.

Sorry for going on so much about my little problem, I will try and be quiet now.

Indeed the best of luck, and hope your recovery is very quick.

Unlike my friend Anagram Fincher.......................

My second name is David, David! Any better for you?

It goes without saying, I'm sure, that we will all be thinking of you, and hoping it all goes as well for you as it possibly can.

I can do no more than wish you staff, environment and care equal to that I encountered on my recent 12 day stay at Watford General. As I said then, statements about the alleged demise of the NHS are clearly made by people who have failed to see the very positive aspects that I have seen. They seem to have done you proud up until now, as far as I have understood, and I have little doubt they will continue to do so.

All the best to you, (and Jan, who I'm sure will find it no easier than yourself!).

Alan (& Cath & Family).

Best Wishes David, and best of luck, if proximity has any effect on the efficacious effect of positive thoughts, and you are in the hospital I think you are, then for much of the working day I am less than a mile away. Even if I'm wrong it's not that far.

So prayers/thoughts/fingers crossed here

Best of luck David. I'm looking forward to your first post-operative posting.

No, I prefer Anagram (of Alan) It's your fault for pointing it out in the first place, but it will stick in my mind like the image of you wearing that bowler hat.

Thanks for the good wishes, will you be fit enough to visit braunston at the end of June? hopefully we can meet up and bore everyone else with our medical recovery stories!

Alan has already said it for both of us, but I have to add my best wishes too, David, we'll be thinking of you. Good Luck.

One of my colleagues returned to work at the New Year after Chemo, her formerly poker straight hair has grown back curly - so don't expect that your hair will necessarily be the same!

All the very best

David, I wish you all the best for and with everything they're going to do to you in the hospital, and hope that you'll recover quickly so you can enjoy life and boating again as much as you used to do, and be in great shape for the Historic Boat Show.

Peter.
