David Schweizer Posted February 28, 2010 Report Posted February 28, 2010 For years I have had a five Gold Star rating, however I noticed about a week ago that it has been reduced to four, how does this happen? I have noticed that the Gold Star box in other people's personal profile says "Rate Me" and that if I run the cursor over the stars they turn blue. Does this mean that someone can reduce my Star Rating by merely clicking on a number of stars less than five? If this is the case, they can surely be found out from the latest vistors list, and just like the pointless ratings on eBay, I can return the "compliment" by de-rating them. Or is it a bit more complicated than that?

Or is it a bit more complicated than that? I'd like to know the mechanisms involved as well. I had five stars until recently - I had a mild disagreement with a forum member and two of my stars suddenly vanished, with said forum member being a recent visitor to my profile!!! I'm back to four stars now with a few friends giving me five star ratings to help top them up (I know it's sad to worry about these things but I do! I want my five stars back!) Seriously, I would be interested to know eksactly how the ratings work (sorry eks on keyboard is non-functional since a coffee spillage incident some time ago) Edited to add - just gave you a 5 star rating David - you've all five back again Edited March 1, 2010 by Ange
Nickhlx Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 ..... or we could see how low we can get our ratings ? - a bit like "ASBOs" if feeling in a mischievous mood Nick
alan_fincher Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 I think it's no cleverer than David or Ange are reporting. Some kind of weighted average of all those that have rated you. So if you have only been rated once at (say) 5, it will show 5. If someone then rates you 1, it will fall to 3, I think. Another 5 might pull it back to 4, (but I "haven't run the maths!"). So if you have never had a rating, fall out with someone, and they hit you with a 1, that's what you'll be, until someone gives you a more kindly vote. But if you have been rated many times already, any further vote will skew it very little. Totally pointless it seems to me - a bit like achieving "long standing member" status if you can manage to post 500 times on your first day. What are you rating, anyway ? I'd give you a 5 for canal knowledge David, but only a 1 for Bowler hat wearing!
Guest Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 3 here, have been up to four I think at some point but it is so arbitrary a process that I don't really worry about it.

luctor et emergo Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 I don't have any stars. And I never got any spam PM messages either... Hello...Hellooo....
Keeping Up Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Did somebody say something there? No, I must have been mistaken.
Nine of Hearts Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Given that the star ratings are fairly pointless, reacting to someone de-rating you by de-rating them is perhaps the most childish thing one could do. (Although I have engaged in such behaviour with RLWP). What I don't get is the "Friends" bit. Is there any point in having "Friends" on your profile? I only ask because I don't have any. "Fat pants, no friends", as the First Mate delights in singing from time to time.

As much as that? given that I never wear a Bowler Hat ( I leave that to the spotted neckerchief brigade) the score should be zero. But just wait until you see my new hat, ceratinly a cut above the average boatman's hat. Edited March 1, 2010 by David Schweizer
carlt Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 What I don't get is the "Friends" bit. Is there any point in having "Friends" on your profile? It may become less pointless, when you've got some... I have friends in my profile that I've never even heard of.
alan_fincher Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 It may become less pointless, when you've got some... I have friends in my profile that I've never even heard of. I'm getting paranoid about looking at anybody's profile now, in case they suffer a star loss for some other cause, and conclude I was the guily party. I've rechecked yours though, and curiously Chris_W remains absent from the list! (He does still "lurk" BTW, as I've had a PM from him not that long ago).

casper ghost Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 My rating's gone down too . I've never given anyone a rating, couldn't see the point but now i'm going to rate everyone as 1*. That'll teach em!
luctor et emergo Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 I suddenly have 5 gold stars now... I'm getting paranoid about looking at anybody's profile now, I'm getting paranoid about looking at my own profile now, all these people who have looked at my profile, I worry why...? What have I done/said?
Guest Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 It may become less pointless, when you've got some... I have friends in my profile that I've never even heard of. You can of course use your controls so that you have to 'approve' a freind before they declare themselves as one. I suddenly have 5 gold stars now... Back down to three now - the immediately preceding vistor before me being.....I'll let you look for yourself....
mayalld Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 Back down to three now - the immediately preceding vistor before me being.....I'll let you look for yourself.... Well, I was the immediately preceding visitor, but that doesn't mean that it was me....
luctor et emergo Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 This is madness, I'm back up to 4 (or am I, hold on, I'll check...) Still no Spam...
carlt Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 You can of course use your controls so that you have to 'approve' a freind before they declare themselves as one. That would be ascribing far more importance, to the process, than it deserves.

luctor et emergo Posted March 1, 2010 Report Posted March 1, 2010 I suddenly feel an urge to make a sandwich...
