Tiny
I bought a load of Sausages in Marks and Sparks in one of those 3 for £x offers. They seem rather nice. In Sainsbury's today in Traditional English Fare they had Sausage and Mash and the one that puzzled me - Meatballs and Mash. Are meatballs British or what? Daftmare
I can thoroughly recommend "Roger's Specials" from Wakelings in Farncombe (just a short walk from Farncombe Boat House, River Wey). Jo.

ex-member200218
My turn to cook tonight ---- sausages, onion gravy, mash etc. The sausages were bloody awful -- Tesco 'finest' would you believe --- course meat, skin made from condoms I think. I know that there are many good butchers around, but sometimes you need to use the supermarkets. Anyone know of a good banger from the big stores? Tony Hope its not too late to contribute to this one; Tescos, (well most of the big supermarkets), now have fantastic sausages labelled Debbie & Andrews. They are absolutely the bees; completely rusk and padding free. They are also labelled as gluten-free, but don't hold that against them. All you get is meat; no fillers and they're comparably priced too! £2.59 for 6 but they are really meaty and chunky so you get a REAL sausage! Fab! Athy
I have seen those but have not tried them, maybe because I have not yet seen them on special offer! Sausage prices went up with a bang(er0 about 18 months or 2 years ago, the speciality or de luxe ones were around £1,50 to £1,70 a lb up till then, now the bog-standard ones are that price and the fact that Miss Boat thinks that £2.59 (probably for a bit less than a lb) is "comparable" (competitive?) tells its own tale. I did enjoy The Black Farmer sausages when they were on special at my local Somerfield's (R.I.P.). At the moment our usual ones are Morrison's Butcher's Choice Cumberland, which if you buy two packs work out at £1.50 per lb. Warning: avoid any sausages which are sold as "Bangers"; this will usually mean that they do not contain enough meat (50% for beef ones, 65% for pork, from memory) to be sold legally as sausages. A query for our resident cranks: are any of the vegetarian "sausages" worth trying? I have never eaten one.
blackrose
Eat a cold sausage and then you realise how much bloody salt the manufacturers put into them! After visiting a sausage factory in Holland I swore I'd never eat the things again...
fudd
There is only one sausage worthy of the name. Rookworst. Dutch smoked sausage, so succulant and tasty, that you will sell your first born into slavery to enjoy it. Best way to enjoy? Either straight, on buttered bread, or even better, with Curly Cale, mashed potato, and diced fried bacon.... Ohh god, I'm salivating now... Accept no immitations... Stampot met boerenkool. Lekker. Athy
Some, yes, BR, though I think that the better (and generally more expensive) the sausage, the less salt it is likely to contain. I shudder to think how much fat, salt and grunge is packed into the "economy" grade of bangers which most supermarkets offer.

journeyperson
It's all down to taste really, I like my classic sausage to be just that, like I had when I was a kid, these hi meat content jobbies (and I deliberatly use that term ) are not the real deal, I would prefer the meat to be hand chopped by fair maidens but I still want the rusk and breadcrumbs etc that create a nice soft texture, so i'll put up with the extracted meat lips and A'holes for a great tasting product I think you are right. There is a chappie selling sausages at Audlem bottom lock and we got some a couple of weeks ago. Home made, and a huge selection of flavours and seasonings which I can't remember but which he reeled off. We bought some and he advised that we cook them for five minutes or so longer than usual because they are low fat. Anyway, they were very meaty and quite tasty but they didn't really taste like my idea of sausages. I can't remember the last time I had a really good sausage as I remember them. We usually eat Richmonds.

David Schweizer
The Black Farmer[/url] does fantastic sausages. Seen them in CoOp and Tesco, but can't say I've seen them in Sainsbury. I have only just found this revived thread, and would not recommend Black Farmer sausages, not because of what they may taste like, but because of the despicable character Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones who owns the company that markets them. He stood as the Tory Parliamentary candate at the last election and managed to upset a lot of local people by pretending that he lived in the constituancy when all he had done was rent a flat in Chippenham, he lives in Devon! He is known for his outspoken views and does not limit his observations to Politicians from opposition parties. If you want to learn more about him, you may find this interesting:- http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/sep/06/wilfred-emmanuel-jones-rachel-cooke-interview P.S. Our favourite sausages are made by John Thorners of Pylle, near Shepton Mallet, Somerset, all made from meat sourced locally in Wiltshire and Somerset. tillergirl
I would try any sausage from a butcher where they boast in their window that they make their own, its usually a good indication that they will be pretty good. Not on the canal network I know but if you ever get up into North Yorkshire, Masham in particular then gives this butcher a visit: http://www.gourmetbr...y.php?item=6865 I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. Worthy buying a good selection to stick in the freezer. Last time we passed through Braunston on holiday we walked up into the village and bought some home-made sausage from the butcher there. Very nice indeed they were. Supermarket I agree with the OP about the range from The Black Farmer...........yum despite his political practices.
