Myself and "she who must be obeyed" are planning our annual narrow boat holiday and would like some help with the route. Firstly it mus'nt have to many locks, and we want to visit Worcester, also we have have to hire the boat from Alvechurch Boats (Tesco Deals Tokens are paying for it). So really its all about marina choice. We have 6 1/2 days to fill.

Well, if you hire from Alvechurch near Birmingham, and you want to go to Worcester, then you have to go through the Tardebigge flight no matter what.

As far as i can see, the only "Alvechurch" base within a week's run from Worcester is Alvechurch itself - and that would involve 58 locks - EACH WAY! There is a railway station at Alvechurch - perhaps you could visit Worcester by train!

Viking Afloat in Worcester are part of the Alvechurch group, you could just potter up and down the River Severn, Avon and Gloucester & Sharpness for a week!

Having looked at their bases I'd have to agree, the only Alvechurch base with worcester within striking distance is ,erm, Alvechurch, which is 56 locks each way!

For very low lock count Try the Anderton Base, and don't dismiss the Weaver. Chester from there is 19 locks each way. Gayton Offers some low lockage routes like north on the Oxford, or Market Harborough. Or go for Possidge and Scotch Whiskey with their Falkirk base, Edinburvh and back 3 locks (all manned) and one wheel!

If you can use your vouchers with Viking that's ideal. You could even come and seek out the Gloucester and Sharpness!

No don't, the G and S is horrible, flat, boring, unfriendly people, bad pubs, foul beer, rotten food... Nowhere to moor...

not true but it's undercrowded and our boats there

Nah, crane it out, start at Black Prince at Stoke Prior, saves half the hard work

There're cranes at both ends of the trip so no hassle with hiring them and it'll save a day or two for coming up the 21 at Wolverhampton...

Locks are just a PITA with no place on a well contructed canal system, best to avoid as many as possible at all feasible cost...

If you can swallow the fact that you have 112 locks on the round trip from Alvechurch, it is a good trip to make and 6.5 days shouldn't be too strenuous. You have a very pleasant, mostly rural, cruise ahead of you perhaps stopping off at Hanbury Wharf for a brilliant (and cheap) lunch at the Eagle & Sun and a pint at The Bridge in Tibberton before getting to Worcester. There are plenty of visitor moorings in the basin and you are only a short walk up the towpath from Worcester centre. If time allows, you could venture onto the river but there is plenty of turning space at the basin. Enjoy!

Thank goodness, it isn't only me.

I don't get these recommendations like "Oooh, do the Ashby. Lots of canal and no locks". No Locks?? Locks are the fun bit. The chance to do something really unusual and special. Why go on a canal if you don't want to do locks?

Richard

Might as well go on a boating lake

Agree about the River Weaver - absolutely marvellous. You could then continue back on the Trent & Mersey/Bridgewater into Manchester and/or take the Leigh Branch across the Barton Swing Aqueduct to Worsley.

Minimal number of locks with this trip apart from the manned locks on the Weaver!

However, this is a long way from Worcester!

how on earth do you save emough tesco deals vouchers up for ta narrowboat holiday????

I've saved up enough Tesco Vouchers in each of the last four years for a narrowboat holiday . .

We're on our fourth holiday this year - - for a fortnight in France on theCanal du Midi (though it's in a tupperware not a narrowboat)

Though you certainly wouldn't be going to Worcester - how about The Llangollen?

Viking at Whitchurch will take your vouchers - and you'll manage Llangollen and back in a really pleasant week - - with few locks, and the added advantage of beautiful scenery

Quite right too!

And none of your namby pamby southern "deep" locks.

Down on the Oxford they call 12 feet deep. DO the buggers not know that we have a flight of 16 locks that are ALL deeper than that.

You'd enjoy the Severn then Phylis, as do we

But perhaps you wouldn't enjoy it in a narrow boat, so you'll have to bring Cal round

Heh heh!

Sorry Phylis old bean- - too late - - we've signed the contract for a widebeam - - realised that when we took to the water we'd have to do it properly!

So you bought a fat narrowboat. Oh dear, you shall realise the error of your ways

Of course i do mean people who are paid to do the job. We always do our share of the work when sharing locks with others

Given under forty minutes down farmers bridge (13) I'd dispute the quicker bit, but large locks need to be manned if there are several boats in them. I saw fisticuffs break out (literally) at the lock at St Ives on the Ouse when a bewhiskered gentleman took exception to a family opening a paddle HALF WAY as it might throw his converted lifeboat about.

I once got told off for opening the paddles to quick for a 30 foot cruiser... who didn't seem to notuce my father was in a car top dinghy sharing the lock
