I found an Ipod in the pub once, left behind the bar for a month and then claimed it as mine, I hate Itunes but discovered that you can use winamp (free download) seemed to work fine. since lost the IPOD but still use winamp.

on the boat we have just got a Dell netbook which we plug into either pc speakers or if we can get away with it we run it through my beloved JVC boom box, had it years and still get surprised by the quality.

Does Winamp recognise the ipod directly then? I have Winamp already as I use it to convert flac files into wav files so that itunes can play it! Never tried to sync the ipod directly to anything else as I am afraid of wiping out what is already on the ipod.

Well thats why I'm happy with foobar - don't need to convert anything it just plays whatever you throw at it.

Have to say, I never thought of hacking an ipod, what with there being open source OS for phones now (I'm thinking Symbian), wonder if you could hack any smart phone and run a symbian OS on it? Can't be that hard?

i have been a bit puzzled not owning an ipod ipod but

implies as i thought that an ipod is just a hard drive with sound built in so you can move all your music in mp3 or aiff format straight over, itunes is not needed.

I assume that anyone using Linux must be capable of (even enjoy) working through technogabble like this.

The ipod file system hfs+ is natively Mac. I recall it relatively straightforward to use this on Windows.

All other mp3 players are almost certainly FAT32 and thus will just appear as drives much like a camera does.

hi chris, thanks for the link.

i haven't come across that one yet. i will give that a try, although i don't hold out a lot of hope. i tried 18 months ago for more time than the problem was worth. and i am not actually all that techy, just like to play. even the really knowledgeable on the help forums find this one a challenge and say 'well this could work, but might not!'

i'm not so much bothered about rescuing the pod, just would like to get the tracks off the machine and onto my music player - all in one place, and made compatible. then i can let one of the kids have the pod and get a more oppen source compatible player.

it's really not that much of an issue but it just p****s me off that i have spent money on hardware and music that are now a bit like betamax. sidelined.

i now buy my music in cd form or unrestricted mp3 so i can put them wherever i like.

anyway, i have rambled on far too long

cheers again for the link
