WJM Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 I have passed this a few times recently and wondered what it is. It is on the bank of the Thames downstream of Molesey / Hampton Court, directly opposite Barge Walk boatyard. It looks possibly like a ventilation shaft for a tunnel, but I cant see how or why there would be a tunnel there. Anyone know what it is?

Grace and Favour Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 It's the sole surviving 'mushroom' from Isambard Kingdom Brunel's first brick-built Canal Boat They never went into production because he could never decide whether to equip them with pump-outs or cassettes
GSer Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 That's where the olympic flame is going to be lit

Paul Evans Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Dad says it might be ventilation for the underground tube railway. He says it's got the right deco style too. Nope! There's no underground line near Hampton Court/Molesey. Could it be some planner's idea of a park shelter? Totally useless of course. Getting my Range Rover tomorrow.
alan_fincher Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Is it a former children's roundabout, where all the "horsies" have been removed for HSE reasons ?

Chris J W Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 Could it be a vent for one of Bazalgette's mega-big-drains?
Dominic M Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 It is a memorial to the kidnapped race horse, Shergar, who won so many major races at nearby Kempton Park.
Paul Evans Posted January 13, 2010 Report Posted January 13, 2010 (edited) Could it be a vent for one of Bazalgette's mega-big-drains? Nope! The interceptory sewers designed by The Great B all started well to the east of Hampton Court/Molesey (Southern Outfall and Northern Outfall) and ran east. How come I seem to know a great deal about all things underground in London? Edited January 13, 2010 by Paul Evans
