I have passed this a few times recently and wondered what it is. It is on the bank of the Thames downstream of Molesey / Hampton Court, directly opposite Barge Walk boatyard.

It looks possibly like a ventilation shaft for a tunnel, but I cant see how or why there would be a tunnel there.

Anyone know what it is?

It's the sole surviving 'mushroom' from Isambard Kingdom Brunel's first brick-built Canal Boat

They never went into production because he could never decide whether to equip them with pump-outs or cassettes

I believe the specific problem was installing the pumpSewage_pump_(New_Catechism_of_the_Steam_Engine,_1904).jpg

blimey I thought I was on my landrover forum for a minute, i'm the 10th reply and still nothing helpful

Dad says it might be ventilation for the underground tube railway. He says it's got the right deco style too.

Nope! There's no underground line near Hampton Court/Molesey.

Could it be some planner's idea of a park shelter? Totally useless of course.

Getting my Range Rover tomorrow.

Could it be a vent for one of Bazalgette's mega-big-drains?

Nope! The interceptory sewers designed by The Great B all started well to the east of Hampton Court/Molesey (Southern Outfall and Northern Outfall) and ran east.

How come I seem to know a great deal about all things underground in London?
