grandunion5 Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 Hi there. Webasto is a topic that has often been discussed here but I'd like your comment on a noise that's appeared recently. I started using my Webasto about a month ago for the first time ever. It sounded quite nomal at that time. I have been using it roughly for 2 hours every morning and occasionally 2 hours in the evening. For the rest of the time, the fella is off and resting. Suddenly, about a week ago, that strange noise appeared in the very first minute after ignition (after that it's fine), and that noise seems to be getting worse every day. It sounds a bit like an old engine that would need oiling or lubricating... that's the best I can describe it. Any suggestion what that might be? Thanks Marc

Thanks Marc My Webasto does exactly the same and has made the noise since almost new (about 2 years), works fine but sounds a bit rough when firing up. I mentioned this to a Webastow engineer who happened to be working on the boat next to mine and he said nothing to worry about but gave no explanation as to it's cause. I intended giving it a good service and clean during last summer but never got round to it. It's still working fine so will do it next summer. Incidently I have heard other boats making the same noise as well.
grandunion5 Posted December 18, 2009 Author Report Posted December 18, 2009 Thanks for your comforting comments Now I know that Webasto is a noisy fella and will just have to live with it haha
deletedaccount Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 On a related question, does your actually heat the boat? Mine keeps it above freezing, but not what I'd call 'hot'.
grandunion5 Posted December 19, 2009 Author Report Posted December 19, 2009 On a related question, does your actually heat the boat? Mine keeps it above freezing, but not what I'd call 'hot'. Yes, it heats the boat rather well, I'd say. I have 8 radiators (4 on each side of the boat - 2 large ones, 4 medium and 1 smaller size and 1 small finrad). Even when I use it to heat up the calorifier, it still delivers the same heat for the radiators. On average (with the cold weather we're getting now, the temperature in the boat goes up by about 3 or 4 degrees per hour. Have you checked whether you've got air trapped in the system?
tosher Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 On a related question, does your actually heat the boat? Mine keeps it above freezing, but not what I'd call 'hot'. Yes warm as toast, 57ft boat, usual layout, 3 rads + towel rail + calorifier. Rads are almost too hot to keep your hand on.
deletedaccount Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 Then mine isn't working as well as it should. I've bled the radiators, well at least I think I have.
Denis R Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 Another possible reason for the noise on start-up is intake/combustion resonance. Mine always has made a shocking noise on start up, which my tame boat engineer (whom I trust) assures me originates from the air intake.
Drayke Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 Then mine isn't working as well as it should. I've bled the radiators, well at least I think I have. Have you checked that the shut off valves are fully open and is your pipe work of the correct size 22mm with 15mm to rads.
