Stovax Stockton 3

Hi,

 

we will need to replace the stove on the boat we are currently buying (and this will be our first so have no experience). We are currently considering the Stovax Stockton 3.

 

Have read multiple threads on on here about stoves, and while a lot of people recommend the Squirrel (and they do seem very expensive), not really come across a 'bad' one.

 

Just wondering if any one has the stovax - are they any good?

 

Our boat will be a weekender/holiday boat - though we do intend to use it all year.

 

(the main reason we are considering it at the mo, is that the boat fitter we are thinking of asking to fit the stove, fits the stovax by default).

 

any thoughts?

We have the stovax 6 with back boiler and are very happy with it. It's on a 56' liveaboard.

We have a Stockton 3 in our lounge at home. It has been working away very well over the last 3 years without problems. We light the stove most nights so it has had plenty of use.

 

I think they are very good little stoves and a nice moving grate on it.

I have a Stockton 4 on my 57 ft boat that I did have a problem with when trying to burn wood (coal was ok), there was very little control over the rate of burn and the glass was blackened almost immediately after lighting. After 18 months and many phone calls & e-mails to the manufacturers I finally got it sorted, it had been assembled incorrectly in the factory and no secondary air was being admitted when in the wood burning mode. It took three visits to my boat to find and correct the fault (no charge) and it now works very well, it was a bit of a struggle but we got there in the end and are pleased with it. tosher.

We have a Stockton 4 in the house (2 up, 2down) which is pretty much running 24/7 now and we find it provides enough heat that we are not using the central heating at all. We run it on wood and Taybright. Can highly recommend this stove.

 

Had a Squirrel on the previous 60ft boat and it performed very well. Apart from the high purchase price I can also recommend this stove.

 

Have a Villager heron on the current boat and I do not like this stove at all, nothing physically wrong with it but I think the designer must have had an off-day with this one and am replacing it with an Aarow Acorn4 from these people: Harridge Stoves

 

I chose the new stove because I know folk who have one and have satisfied myself that it will do the job. I also think the £360 inc. vat and delivery price from the folk above is very competitive. The stove was delivered yesterday and is now awaiting installation into Goldie.

 

(Villager and Aacorn are now the same company owned by Arada)

p.s. the Heron will be for sale as soon as it is un-installed. It is in good condition but it is not for me. When it is ready for sale it will appear in the relevant forum but i am prepared to take 'declarations of interest' via either pm or email

Out of curiosity what is it you particularly don't like about the Heron, (which our boat came with).

 

I'm not keen on a drop down door, rather than side swinging, (corrected on the similar Puffin, of course), or it's ability to shed it's glass fixing studs, (but which I am told other makes can also do).

 

Otherwise it seems to deliver the goods, so I'm interested in why you think it is worth the considerable cost to replacer.

Fair enough - we seldom burn wood, which may be the difference.
