We want to be boating in under a week's time, down towards London, but have the complication that we need to be at a wedding in Alperton from lunch time on Sunday 25th October.

The venue, on the Ealing Road at Alperton appears to be close to the canal, but we are really looking for somewhere a bit quieter we can leave the boat, (and possibly a son!), for at least a day, and probably overnight there too.

We lack any local knowledge of the area.

Kensal Green looks to be about 5 miles away, but that area is criss-crossed by railways and marshalling yards, and there seem to be very few roads, so I'm not sure how easy to get a taxi or tube to where we need to be.

A better idea might be to stop in Uxbridge, as the Picadilly line would seem to be a good way of getting to Alperton.

Suggestions, please, from those who know the area.

Many thanks.

You could moor at the Sainsbury's there - a nice mooring with bollards, and especially if someone is going to be on board perfectly safe during the day. You could push a night, but I'd avoid it if you could.

There was a boat moored along the canal just through the underground bridge for quite a few weeks - I assume they had no problems. There are also boats moored on the opposite side. There is a pub close to the bridge which may be able to offer a mooring.

I'd say you're better off at Uxbridge and getting the tube in. Far quieter and nicer IMHO.

But since the do is virtually waterside, why not? Especially if Alan's going into town any way? What better way to travel?

If you're coming down as far as Brentford you could brest up to me but then you've got to take a bus to Boston Manor tube station and change at Acton Town.

I tend to agree with Chris, Uxbridge is your best bet.

You could just moor at Alperton but who wants to stop there!

Thanks for replies....

I had thought about the Sainsbury's moorings, and agree it would be OK, but probably not the classiest of overnight moorings.

Thanks for the Brentford offer, Mike, but we have logistical problems being anywhere close in sufficient time anyway, (based on when we can start out!), and adding the 10 (or so?) locks down that extra bit would be more than we can make time for. (Quite a bit of work to do on boat before I leave, including refitting stove area, mending stove, and re-installing it...)

Can anybody tell me about "Horsenden Hill", (offside from towpath), which I know nowt about. Some appears to be private golf course, but other looks more public. I have seen lines of boats moored there temporarily, I think, for some kind of barbecue type event, possibly. (Pretty sure it was not permanent moorings that I recall).

Is there anywhere there that is quiet legitimate overnight moorings, please, (as I say, I simply don't know thea area).

Greenford's not too bad, either.

Quiet even with the Black Horse (a very nice pub) being close. Handy for the tube, too.

You could also try the Black Horse at Greenford. Bit of a dump I know, but there is good transport there. I think I'd moor here at Batchworth (Rickmansworth), if it were me & use a cab or the train to get into Alperton. (Metropolitan line). Uxbridge is OK, if you don't mind the noise. I work each day in Park Royal, But am very reluctant to moor beyond Uxbridge as its much nicer here in Ricky Rather than in the middle of a trading estate.

If you are a member of an AWCC affiliated club the WLMCC is at Alperton and they should be able to help.

How about the park on the offside, just after Willowtree Marina, a favourite mooring spot of ours for many years. It's between the entrance to Willowtree Marina and Engineers Wharf. There are usually a handful of boats there.

Also at Horsendon Hill, we've moored the Pirate Club boats overnight on the offside near Horsendon Hill Golf Course, because there's land adjacent for the kids to run around on. Between bridge 14 and 13, you could also moor near the Black Horse as others have mentioned.

I've moored between bridges 11 & 12 in Alperton with no problems - v close to Alperton tube

Also Black horse is ok (but a bit grotty) & convenient to Greenford tube

Horsenden Hill is better imo cos it's nicer but you'd have further to walk in your finery

Greenford's fine at the weekends - it's the weekdays that become noisier with local works. The Black Horse does a nice Sunday roast if you need a pick-me-up the morning after the wedding  The moorings are a 5 minute walk from Greenford tube which is one stop down the Central line from Perivale.

The small park between Willowtree and Engineers Wharf is lovely and very handy for the local Tesco, although public transport from there's a bummer. It's about £6 in a taxi from Greenford tube, or a 25 minute bus ride.

There are quite a lot of nice spots to moor along the stretch between Greenford and Alperton, so if you don't like the look of Greenford just keep going. Past Alperton the public transport links become less convenient so I wouldn't bother unless you go all the way into Little Venice and make the most of the facilities

Have a lovely time!

If you're going to moor at Alperton, I suggest you stop north of the bridge and moor up next to the flats/units (there are some rings there). The Sainsbury's mooring is like the M25 and you WILL be woken at about 6am, by the local staff and shoppers who trawl through chatting and whistling, having been up till about 4am with the pub going youth lobbing home via the towpath to the council estate. Only 50% of them actually kick the boat though...

Alperton is one of the best transport linked moorings but I'll keep an eye out for you around Uxbridge if you decide the long haul in is preferrable.

As someone currently doing to the Uxbridge to Central London commute (notoriously long and slow), I'd head in closer if I were you LOL.
