This little fellow was amongst the more usual ducks at Llangollen Basin this morning. I've never seen one before and he was getting some stick from the other birds. Some googling revealed that it is a Mandarin Duck.

Yup that's them, there is/was a 'flock' at Bushy Park nature reserve.

There used to be a few on the Shroppie.

Can't exactly remember where but somewhere between Audlem and Market Drayton...

Saw one somewhere between Blackburn & Hapton last week - it made me very happy

They're not native to this country - "escapees have established themselves in a feral state" according to my 70s bird book.

The only other place i've seen one is Regents park where there are several strange species of duck

I was with Lonewolf when we spotted that one last weekend on the Leeds and Liverpool. Very strange...I've fished that stretch for the past three years and never seen one before.

Hope it sticks around!

what a great picture. I saw some of these last week along with a few other breeds of ducks I had never seen before at Martin Mere Wetland centre just close to where I am moored at present. My photos are nowhere as good at this one but a couple of unusual duck pics on my website Ducks on Website clicky

We saw one of these this time last year on the Grand Union at Weedon. They certainly stand out from your average native duck.

There was one at Etruria Junction on the T&M a couple of weeks ago. It wouldn't get close enough to have it's photo taken.

we saw one of these on the Trent & Mersey at Stoke last month he was with a group of standard ducks (see my expertise on wild life) he was or she was very aggressive towards the others in the group as we were feeding them with bread.

Lucky it wasn't a Blue Beaked Ruddy Duck as the RSPB/Wildfowl trust have had them killed as the few that live here (might) commute to Spain and chat up and mate with a lady duck of a close Spanish breed thus the pure Spanish duck type dies out.

This was him, at Weedon last year. He was happy to pose for photos for as long as he thought there might be some bread provided as payment.

There used to be a wonderful collection of unusual ducks at Aylesbury. Someone who lived in one of the canalside houses just outside the basin, used to collect them; they were happy to live in his garden and on the canal.

I knew there was a thread about ducks.

We saw a mandarin duck about 1 mile north of Fenny Compton on the Southern Oxford. Could be the one from Weedon moving about.

We are quite blessed here on the Broads, we have lots of escapees that seem to hook up with other odd uns, a pair of Egyptian Geese (who actually ducks) have a pal with them who is a Gadwall, they have been a threesome for 3 or 4 years now. We have a pair of Black Swans who breed now (they never flew from Oz) there is also an Artic Goose (Alaskan) and an American Tree Duck. We also have a Muscovey who has spent the last 5 winters living on our side deck (it is warm) There is a small flock of Canadian Geese who have a Greylag Goose tagging along.

But have yet to see a Mandarin.

I'm sure there used to be some of these just East (North?? towards Leeds anyway!!) of the top of Johnsons Hillock flight on the Leeds Liverpool as there always was a large gathering of ducks there (think it was some kind of Duck farm but not sure).

I've seen them here and there; probably where others have.

They are very attractive anyway.

These cute littlefellers were bought in the affluent nineties by folk wanting live decorations around thier ponds and lakes so the distribution will be sporadic but hopefully they will join together where possible and become more prolific and brighten up the countryside
