Food shopping in Leicester

Featured Posts

Hi

Will be passing through Leicester, heading north, on Saturday. Any moorings recommended for food shopping?

Have read about problems with vandalism on the locks and the paddles being padlocked (although a number of the padlocks appear to have been vandalised). How bad is the problem, are there places to avoid mooring?

Thanks.

The safest place is Castle gardens secure moorings in the centre, from which it's an easy walk into the centre where you will find a superb undercover market, and numerous good butchers, bakers etc. Also some small supermarkety shops.

If you are wanting big supermarkets though, we were stuck in floods, at Belgrave lock last year at this time, and found it an easy walk to Sainsburys on a nearby roundabout....walk along the towpath to the main road, (up some steps) turn right and keep going, the roundabout has a big flyover on it, sainsburys is on the far side..everyone locally knows where it is, perhaps 6 mins walk from the towpath. We were there about 3 days with no real problems.

Personally, I'd go for Castle Gardens and the centre though.

Enjoy!

Didnt have a problem with the leicester folk, although it didnt have any canalside pubs to note and its not exactly a picture-squew mooring spot.

- Luff basin backs straight onto the road behind saisburys. Walk round to the right of there carpark and the entrance is less than 250yrds from the moorings.
