We set off from Cowley today on our first long cruise as we are now both retired! We are off to Llangollen and will explore the Caldon canal on the way there and also the Montgomery when we get nearer. We will come back down the Shropshire Union to Autherley junction then up to Great Heywood on the Staffs and Worcs before turning for home. 536 miles and almost 400 locks. Hope to see some of you along the way.

We will be travelling at about one third/one quarter Alan Fincher speed probably with shortish days and allowing a day and a half a week for no progress at all! Hope to be back at the begining of October

So might we be, if we had no time constraints!

Unfortunately we do, and the only way we can get to see new canals is to move along a bit lively. Much though I like the Grand Union, I have seen a lot of it many times now, and it's nice to do something different. That said the bit we are on now is my first time here in over 35 years.

Enjoy your trip - I suppose we may pass somewhere, I'm not sure.

You're sure to pass me somewhere, i'm slowly, very slowly, making my way from Penkridge to Ellesmere..

We got off to a bad start last night - we moored just below Widewater lock but unbeknown to us this was quite close to the site of an annual rave which did not become apparent until well after dark. We had one guy running over the roof at about 11pm and some various bangs on the side throughout the night as people went up and down the towpath. This morning we discovered we were relatively lucky as another boat had a window smashed and another had a fight going on outside their boat. The rave apparently was in a field under one of the railway viaduct arches that crosses the canal between Denham Deep Lock and Widewater Lock.

Tonight should be more peaceful in Cassiobury park near Grove Ornamental Bridge.

Hi Mick,

I recognise your boat from the marina where mine was moored when i bought it.

You seem to be a day behind me - I was a bit below Widewater on Friday night (where i was warned of/invited to the rave by 'concrete' tony) & just up from cassio bridge lock last night.

You'll probably pass me in Berkhamsted where i'll be staying for a few nights. Give us a wave as you pass or come knocking if you fancy stopping for a beer.

I'm on 'Innisfree' (blue & red)
