16 days cruising ...

Yippee - we've got 16 days on the boat coming up soon.

We were thinking of doing the Leicester Ring but have just been looking at Pearson and it looks as though quite a lot of it is urban. I could really do with some "away from it all" cruising.

We are based by Calcutt Locks and have got a maximum of 16 days but are in need of some rest and recuperation so don't want to give ourselves an ambitious itinerary, some time to sit and chill on the canal bank should be built in. There's just the two of us (plus 2 dogs). We're 60ft, narrowbeam.

We've been down the Oxford as far as the Thames and whilst that is, so far, my favourite stretch of canal, would like to go somewhere different. Any suggestions/recommendations?

We have just got back from a week on the Leicester Arm (From Stockton to Market Harborough and back). It is a very pretty Canal and that section is very rural, what's more it was very quiet with very few boats, we moored up overnight at Market Harborough and apart from the ubiquitous Canal Time Boats in the Basin, there were only three other boats moored there. It is a bit shallow in places and there are very few official mooring sites, but there are plenty of other places where you can moor in the middle of nowhere. (our boat is 2ft 9ins deep so most boats should have no problem with depth) There are no pubs except at Norton junction and Foxton, and you need to make sure that you have plenty of supplies on board as there are very few places where you can gain access to shops. Even Market Harborough was over a miles cycle ride to Tescos and Sainsbury's. We enjoyed it very much and would certainly recomend it.

We did the ring last year, and apart from Leicester it was very enjoyable, just do Leicester in the day and don't leave your boat unattended. you can do it eisily in 16 days

We went down to Market Harborough end of May and enjoyed the trip, although it was busy at MH and we had to moor up quite a way back down the tow path.

(if you need it, the pump out at the basin was £6.30 - card available from the shop in the basin)

We don't mind the lack of pubs - we rarely go to one - but the odd canalside shop for milk and veg would be nice.

There is always the welford arm, which is very pretty and has a couple of pubs in the village.
