Spam messages send via PM system

I'm probably being thick but what is the "standard PM facility"?

OK! Just an ordinary PM - its just that when you receive an unsolicited PM there is no 'Report' facility to send an automatic report to the Site Crew as in these topics.

I thought it looked a bit suspect so before I 'looked at the topic' I looked up the profile. Which was pretty vacant but

thank you to those who put comments such as 'spammer' I immediately deleted the message.

Wonder what I was getting?

Viagra or naked ladies?

Neither does much for me it must be said!

I got the message to. These people are a pain but at least you can get rid of them - unlike the power crazed mob in our local planning office that are trying had to offer their neighbour the chance of closing the Canal Central shop on the Monty by stinking him out with ever more heaped muck carted from approved sheds containing hundreds of cattle on an ever growing 3 year old factory farm (Though the planners maintain this is not a factory farm and that farming is not an industrial process.)

The last offender was simply deleted but with this latest one, I have tried a different tack. I have suspended him/her for 365 days this will make it more difficult for them to rejoin the forum under a new name.

May I re-iterate my earlier plea that members immediately report any unsavoury or spam PMs to the Site Crew using the standard PM facility. It works but we cannot deal with something if we do not know about it!

And in wades that dozy mod, Nick, before he has read the topic. He got a PM and went stright in and deleted Denirtos.

Silly boy.

Oh, another spam trying to sell me electrical products, from a "Gibbo". Batteries not included apparently.

.

Is were you click on the Report button on the bottom LHS of the post. This PM's all the mods and the first one to pick it up deals with it.

Could someone please tell me why i am receiving spam adverts in my message box.

I got an e-mail telling me that someone had replied to my thread, which i have never ever had till this one and when i get here i have two messages from a member that turned out to be adverts, which in my opinion is spam.

I don't take very kindly to having this done to me.

I have been reading this forum for over 2 years now,it is the best entertainment available on the internet

I am a forum admin and recognise many of the new names you have signing up as prolific, well known spammers. There is a simple spam stop service available for most forum software here > http://www.stopforumspam.com/ that prevents most of these registrations,if there is no API yet for IPB you can import the email ban list and report all spammers to the list thereby killing the email address for 1000's of other sites.

IBP have produced a new PM spam flood mod to add to this version of the board ,see here http://forums.invisionpower.com/topic/2829...ip-board-2-3-6/

and lastly never ever use "delete" on nuisance member/spammer, they are then free to come back on the same IP/email/usename , using "Ban" prevents that happening.

Keep up all the entertaining (and interesting ) posts that keep me laughing.

So it looks like several of us have a bad case of 'Denitros' maybe we really do need those details of the Canadian Pharmacy eh..........

I too have just deleted the Canadian Pharmacy before deleting the pm.

They are a menace, can you ban pm spammers? I understand you need to ban the ip not the name?

I've had 2 or 3 messages from spammers in my PM box.

Is there is some way they are sending a PM to all members with one click? If this was made impossible I'm sure they wouldn't spend the time to PM every member individually.

Yes i got 2 spams also. unfortunately this kind of thing can happenson any forum. Yes they are spammers. What ever you do, do NOT click on the links, hoover over them first to see where they link too!. report them straight away. lets put a stop to them.

Banning the IP will do very little as the majority of spam comes from "bots" and they use any IP address they find available. I have seen one username try to join a forum I run 97 times in one morning, the name and email in use remained the same the IP changed to machines placed all over the world at each attempt. The professional spammers use infected or unprotected machines and servers anywhere they can find them.

One of the reasons I chose not to use IPB software was that I could not give users enough control over who sees their information and can contact them, my users have a "privacy " control and can also choose to block contact/visitor messages/PM's unless the sender is on a contact list.

Maybe IBP will have more modules available for access control,it all means more work for the forum admin/host sadly.

Don't take it personally whatever you do - spammers are paid by these 'viagra' selling rackets to write computer programmes to infiltrate internet communites and get their spam to as many users as possible.

It's not a real person that sent you the spam, but a 'bot'. Definition of a bot

This is how they managed to target so many of us. We will probably have to look at updating the boards software in order solve the problem. It's kind of a similar thing to antivirus software - as the spammers get smarter with their clever programmes we have to figure out new ways of solving these problems.

I know it can be upsetting, but please understand it's not a personal thing, these spammers neither know nor care who you are and it is a program that sent you that message.

We are really sorry about this but please bear with us as it might take a while to sort out.

For now, if you do receive this spam, report it in the usual way, please do not reply or click on any links as it only encourages them.

Boatless, as mods we do not have the same access to the board software as Jon, the owner does.

Yes I am aware this is a 'bot' problem, the last time we had a problem with spammers we did an upgrade. I will make sure Jon reads this thread - thanks for your suggestions.

Please also I am asking that members be patient with us, it's not as simple as just banning the 'member' that spammed you, as this is a computer programme causing the problem it's a bit more tricky than that!

Can I endorse this. I have used the "report" button several times and the mods tidy up amazingly quickly. I had considered starting a thread to recommend others do the same rather than just posting "looks like spam to me" on to a thread. In my opinion, the mods do a great job but this site does rely on the rest of us letting them know when we find stuff that shouldn't be here.
