AN action-packed weekend of events showcasing the city's waterways made such a splash last year that it's back again this summer.

And organisers of the Aire Action Leeds Waterfront Festival are promising this year's affair will be even better.

The weekend celebration aims to attract hundreds of visitors and city dwellers down to the waterside for a programme of arts, culture and entertainment including jazz, street theatre, living sculptures, walks, river cruises, a craft market and narrow boat parade.

Rachel Clunas, project officer for Aire Action Leeds, said: "The aim is to bring more and more people to the waterfront and a festival which highlights all that the waterfront in Leeds has to offer is one of the best ways to do that.

"There is so much to enjoy. With activities across the waterfront and in the water there will be something for everyone! And best of all – it's free!"

The event on July 11 and 12 will take place over three key waterside sites – Brewery Wharf, Clarence Dock and Thwaite Mills.

It is organised by Aire Action Leeds, a partnership made up of British Waterways, The Environment Agency, Leeds City Council, Yorkshire Water and the Waterfront Association.

And it is supported by Park Lane College, Arup and Absolute Design – although more sponsors are welcome.

The programme is still being finalised but organisers have pledged to deliver a broad mix of performances to appeal to all tastes.

Another event making the most of the water this summer is the Dragon Boat Race in Clarence Dock on June 27 and 28, to raise funds for Leeds Community Foundation.

Last year 28 teams, many in fancy dress, took to the water in 40ft boats, raising more than £30,000 to help people living in some of the most deprived areas of Leeds.

The 16-strong teams rowed along the River Aire in heats between Crown Point Bridge and Leeds Bridge, passing Brewery Wharf, Centenary Bridge and The Calls.
