Trans-pennine trip raising funds for RNLI

I am putting a rather strange kayaking trip together called Kayak Coast 2 Coast. The trip will start on the 14th of March 2009 near Crosby at the Mouth of the Mersey Estuary. At Runcorn we will join the Bridgewater canal and at end the of the first day we will finish at Preston Brook. As we continue we will follow a historic trading route through Manchester along The Rochdale Canal and the Calder Navigations across the Pennines before reaching the Humber Estuary at Goole. On the Humber the route passes Hull and after 8 days, over 150 locks and 182 miles, finishes at the historic lifeboat community at Spurn Head on the North Sea Coast. Along the way we will be raising money for the RNLI via our charity page http://www.justgiving.com/kayakcoast2coast More information can be found at http://kayakcoast2coast.blogspot.com/

Most sea kayak voyages take place in wild places far from our homes, often in different countries sometimes on the other side of the world. Running a close parallel to the walkers / cyclists 'Trans-Pennine Trail', our journey will pass right through the very cities and suburbs from which we, and thousands of other outdoor enthusiasts seek escape every weekend. There will be a very low carbon footprint for our trip.

Hope this is of interest!

Hi,

From your timings you should probably miss the 24hr closure of the Calder & Hebble Navigation at Cooper bridge on the 18th. The river above Cooper bridge is also running very low at the moment as the weir has collapsed but that hopefully will be sorted by mid March.

18 - 18 Mar 2009 Stoppage: Cooper Bridge to Battyeford Flood Gates

Associated Regional Office: BW Yorkshire

Closure of Navigation and Towpath. From 00.00 hrs on 18 March for 24 Hours.

Installation of a third party overhead pipe crossing over the River Calder approx 100m downstream of Cooper Bridge Lock, Cooper Bridge, Huddersfield.

Please follow any signage at adjacent locks or instructions from Contractors on site.

(Enquiries: 0113 281 6860)

The towpath is also closed

Suggest you check Waterscape stoppages page for any other possible impediments. I apologise if I am teaching granny to suck eggs and all that.

Peter.
