Illegal boaters beware!

OWNERS of unlicensed boats are being warned – ‘we’re watching you’.

British Waterways’ officers are taking to the water to catch licence evaders.

Over the next week they will be checking boat licences in a bid to find out how many are not contributing to the cost of maintaining the waterways.

With 2,559 boats in the Yorkshire region, experts say there are a minority who avoid paying.

Robert Broadbent, leisure business officer, said: “Our canals are wonderful places to spend time exercising, enjoying wildlife or simply watching the world go by.

“The income from boating activity is very important in helping us maintain the network and most boaters are fully paid up contributors.

“There are however, a small minority of licence evaders and we will be working hard to make sure we know who they are and where they are so we can take the necessary action.”

Patrol officers will be stopping off at sites along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, and at the borough’s rivers and marinas, to register boats.

So far this year 130 unlicensed boats were seized throughout the UK with ten in the Yorkshire region.

The seized boats are sold to recover the costs while those with little or no value are crushed.

It's a damn easy stretch to police ... there's hardly anywhere to moor up, licenced or not!

At least they are doing something about it!

Maybe they just want to push everyone who isn't paying out into the next section for them to deal with

Maybe BW should look at the practise of renting out BW trade plates with the mooring? (They should take a look on the Calder & Hebble)

Or maybe they just choose to ignore it because there isn't a policy to deal with it?

Saying that those license fees are a bit costly for those that don't get a trade plate aren't they?
