Dead Fish

It certainly made a mess of our weekend, the Rochdale Canal Soc. had planned to attend a Canals Festival in Failsworth this weekend.. We got the promotions caravan down there but the stoppage meant that we could not get the two boats that we planned to take further than the Rose of Lancaster in Chadderton..

Awful lot of work for several people over many days more or less wasted.. Well you can't win them all.

The latest news about the stoppage, the Environment Agency are now saying that probably 5 gallons of weed killer have been deliberately or accidentally dumped into the canal.. 20,000 dead fish have been pulled out of the waterway including .............. A Pike, Five feet in length !

  • 2 weeks later...

We were hoping to go up when it happened, but waited in Manchester a day, and then changed plans. The BW guys said it was a 50 gallon drum of some ancient weedkiller that someone didn't want to pay to dispose of, they said the culprit had been caught, but thats the last I heard. The Rochdale isn't a lucky canal is it?

The latest word from BW is that the canal will be closed from lock 64 (Kay Lane) to lock 84 (Junction with the Ashton canal) "At least until the 16th Aug when a further decision will be made".

That story about a drum of weedkiller may or may not be true, they don't know as yet what the poison is.

No doubt BW will expedite matters with their usual efficiency.

According to the local rag newspaper the word from the Environment Agency is that a quantity of herbicide entered the canal via a road drain under 'The Causeway' close to the Boat and Horses pub.. The fish death-toll has now been down rated to 15,000, don't know if they miscounted or 5,000 have just got better.
