Morse gear control cables

Does anyone have any strong feelings about the lubrication of Morse gear cables? Method of going about it, clever dodges, how often, with what?

Many years ago on some of our fleet vehicles the accelerator cables were 'plastic' lined and one of the bright 'mechanics' decided to lubricate them, it actually had the opposite effect.

Hi Ian.

 

The modern ones all seem to have stainless steel inners and nylon coated outers so in theory you should not need to lubricate them at all.. However me being and old fashioned type I always oiled them anyway on the grounds it can't do any harm.

You can get a special oiler from most byker shops.

 

But I too note that some cables should not be oiled (Those where the inner cable is actually plastic, or in some cases teflon coated

Don't oil them, the innards is stainless steel running in a plastic. Keep the ends clean and lube the pivots.

Parts of the cable are nylon, stuff like WD40 actually bugger nylon.

Drop of oil on the pivots - but otherwise, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Anything you're unsure about greasing, Vaseline is a good option, good on car aerials too.

Be a waste of effort on my car aerial - it's not telescopic.
