MartinClark Posted May 23, 2008 Report Posted May 23, 2008 A couple of the locks were really hard, though. I have never found any of the Ashton locks hard, but then I haven't been down the locks so far this year, so some of them must have got stiffer. Now, the Huddersfield Narrow, on the other hand - I snapped a windlass in half trying to open a paddle on one lock in Slaithwaite last week!
Mac of Cygnet Posted May 25, 2008 Report Posted May 25, 2008 I have never found any of the Ashton locks hard, but then I haven't been down the locks so far this year, so some of them must have got stiffer. Now, the Huddersfield Narrow, on the other hand - I snapped a windlass in half trying to open a paddle on one lock in Slaithwaite last week! Nothing to do with the Ashton paddle gear (although several weren't working), simply the bottom gates/ paddles were leaking so much that I couldn't shift the top gates against the flow - had to tie the boat to one beam and use full reverse to help me. BTW, my trip included a double traverse of your pride and joy, the Huddersfield Narrow, and I enjoyed it so much I joined the Society. (All this because I chickened out of going up the Rochdale single-handed). Mac
magpie patrick Posted May 27, 2008 Author Report Posted May 27, 2008 Well, as most of you said we would, we got through with no trouble except prop fouled. I've never done this length at all before and was aware of it's reputation. Having cruised it now I'd say the amount of new development will have taken much of the source of any problem away. Overnight mooring may be slightly dodgy due to the route being used to walk home from the pub, but overall the former reputation of this canal perhaps should be well and truly laid to rest. I'm not a great fan of hydraulic paddle gear but I would say that Magpie Val and mum (73 and getting frail with pulmonary fibrosis) were able to work the paddles with ease, which isn't something I can often say! Oh, and the Jolly Angler in Ducie street was a real find, proper beer, a couple of fiddle players, and comfortable seats.
gaggle Posted June 2, 2008 Report Posted June 2, 2008 went up the ashton on sunday no probs meself. huddersfield couple of empty pounds just before scout tunnel , no water and no shower working at the toilet block under the pylons. came back down through manchester sunday , passed through canal street area at 12-30 am as the clubs were getting lively and we were given a loud and good natured reception from everyone along the streets. got to check the video for the actions of some very drunk females who i am told let it all hang out.
