Lathom marina plan finally scuppered after appealMar 27 2008

by Gemma Jaleel, Ormskirk Advertiser

AN APPEAL for planning permission for a marina alongside the Leeds-Liverpool canal at Lathom has been rejected because of the impact on the Green Belt and the surrounding roads.

Planning permission was refused for the 82-berth marina on land east of the canal, off Runnel Brow and Carr Lane last year but applicant Paul Martland of Warpers Moss Lane, Burscough, challenged the decision.

However, inspector Brian Rogers has supported the initial decision.

Mr Rogers also said that a proposed 200-berth marina in Scarisbrick also meant that it would absorb local demand so there would be no need for another marina.

The proposed Lathom development included canal excavations, connection to the existing canal, a new footpath bridge, a maintenance building containing pump-out and equipment store, office and bin store and landscaping.

I think its a good thing that it wasnt allowed. Marinas dont look good at all and we dont need another marina full of rows of narrowboats that never move.

if owners of narrowboats choose not to move maybe they should consider life in a caravan , these are in my opinion the most likely people to complain when other boats pass them by , no matter how slow the boats pass.

If they don't wish to move fair play to them. A bit of tarmac with 60 foot white lines instead of the usual 8 foot as normally used in car parks will do the job. Most narrowboats do have flat bottoms after all...

Passing boats won't bother them either...

There are two huge marinas at Rufford and a new one is being built (near a large caravan site) at Scarisbrick so there is no need to build a marina at Lathom on Green Belt land. You are lucky to see one boat on the move when ever you visit the canal.
