Vandals destroy Charity Boat

It should be "Just imagine if he WERE serious". It's the subjunctive tense - we Tories learnt that at grammar school. Those halcyon days of discipline. fags and matron.......

Chris

Some socialists attended Grammar school too!

Fair enough, we got there on the grounds of being intelligent, not just having rich mummies and daddies, and, as a result, were bullied by the less bright but more financially, endowed.

Some even passed the oxbridge but gave them the middle finger and attended red brick.

Just what I would expect of a socialist - no understanding of our great British class system. Who were we expected to look down upon if a few of the lower classes didn't attend Oxbrige? Noblesse Oblige

But equally there are a lot of people who couldn't give two flippin hoots about you, your property, your very life. Why would anyone ever want to give those people a chance when they have no desire to gain anything in life apart from pleasing themselves.

It is easy to say this whilst looking one way without realising the irony that there's a whole lot of people stood over the other way with exactly these values who are seen as 'successful' by society's current paradigms. I would rather deal with the low-lifes, at least they have ignorance as an excuse.

But seen as the literal truth, I couldn't agree more, as long as it includes everyone to whom this description applies.

I don't know what the answer is here. I have spent many years comng acrosspeople (and I use that term lightly) tha would rather tread on you than help you. I've seen some of these spongers as someone called them sitting on their porch steps drinking special brew smoking fags, and spending their milk tokens that wee supposed to be for their babies on fags, booz and just about anything to keep themselves happy and stuff the rest of society. Who cares if their party that goes on all night into the early hours wakes up he kids next door who need sleep. Who cares if their kids are out vadalising someone else's property or kicking some old man to death. It's not their problem, they don't work, thier kids only see what their parents are like, so where is the example.

I'm all for chances in life, but some people don't ask to be liked or certainly don't give you a reason to like them. I'm not talking about a lot of poverty striken people. I've knowna few homeless people and they are lovely. They really do just want to be left to it and are grateful for offerings of food, clothes and alcohol. I feel for the kids that are smart but they are living in poor conditions where the chances of them going to a good school or getting a sponsorship are next to nil. I feel sorry for all of those people and it is a shame more projects, money and time went into helping those people.

But equally there are a lot of people who couldn't give two flippin hoots about you, your property, your very life. Why would anyone ever want to give those people a chance when they have no desire to gain anything in life apart from pleasing themselves.

As for punishment for crimes? Our justice system is pretty pathetic. We are too easy to slap asbo's all over the place rather than find preventative measures for ensuring things like that just don't happen in the first place. If the parents of some of these way ward kids (nd I mean the parents who haven't given them any sort of discipline, boundaries, etc) were punished for their kids behaviour you would find a lot of people signing up for parent classes and family counselling esp if they thought there was some financial incentive in it for them. Prison have never been a punishment for most. Hell it's a bloody holiday camp.

Imagine you are some down in luck kid, your parents live in a tatty council house (and we are talking one they can't be bothered to look after) they sit around all day drinking and smoking, no parental responsibilities at all, leave the kid to it, kid gets into trouble causing trouble with his mates, who have parents who are equally intoxicated on a permanent basis. The kids have no life at home, their parents don't give a bugger because they just want them out of their hair so they can get drunk. Kid gets caught and if the crime is serious enough, they may go to a detention centre, or an adult prison if they are 18 plus. There they have a warm bed, a room, 3 meals a day, shpwers, games, TV, free view, exercise, use of computeres, libraries and more counselling support and educational needs than they would ever get at home. Why not keep getting yourself chucked back in?

Life should mean life, there should be a lot more community service dished out. If some of those kids spent anytime getting the crap out of the canals, cleaning off graffiti (although some of it is very good and a waste of a good talent), and generally having to keep this country of ours tidy, it would be a heck of a better detterent than sitting in a prison cell or watching their favourite TV programmes with a spliff and a can of moonshine care of HM prison.

Exactly,

but what about our community places, we need to stop people(and B.W.B.) claiming them as theirs to maintain and charge us for, and get back what they have taken. Canals are just the kind of place that criminals can enjoy walling, hedge laying, restoration of abandoned boats, and other tiresome but satisfying graft. If they could realise being forced to make their world a better place providing for their future, is wholesome. There is masses of interesting land in this country that has been incidently squatted, or never had ownership claimed(say forestry, canal paths),but red lines are being drawn at the land Registry, giving people and various agencies ownership that only have certain rights, as it is our land. These places harbour wildlife research, archaeology, and potential restoration and tourism, all needing revealing and consequently serviceing (hence their haveing a "lunched" appearance).

Instead of stealing it by default when we use it(council provision of parking, bins etc. & the B.W.B methods we all see)We need the criminal justice system to help, these criminals can't steel it by default, and even if they could they are us, so it is theirs allready.

I'ts about time we took this on, some of the canal was even built by prisoners, it's their inhertance too, please B.W.B. give it back, plenty of people are happy to sign up to your scheme, you've got your rights to have your ways, you don't need to steel of the rest of us to do this though.

Visa vis the vandalised boat maybee one of the kids they are helping did it, in which case they are obviosly deserving of the help the charity offers(you can't win them all). If so, I hope there will be a lot of preasure from their peers to prevent them from doing it again, in which case the whole thing is a sucessfull learning curve.

Your spelling is awful, your grammar pitiful and your logic skewed beyond any reason. Your anguished platitudes and the tone of your high-pitched chattering whine mark you out as some kind of 'cause-fighter'. Kindly take a more measured and rational approach if you wish to be taken seriously.

While not necessarily agreeing with the sentiments stated by Malarky, I've always felt it wise not to criticise people for their grammar or spelling online. There may be many reasons why someone cannot write as well as others. It is unkind and disrespectful, I suggest, to be quite so derogatory. After all, some of your own posts have both spelling mistakes and incorrect grammar.

I don't know. Those who couldn't spell Oxbridge properly? (Noting your own criticism of others' spelling earlier)

No......attacking someone simply for their spelling and grammar is puerile and condescending, and you deserved that response.

I like you, whoever you are.

On matters semantic and pedantic, I was criticised for my grammar by Chris W - stating "if only he was serious" should be the subjunctive "if only he were serious", which of course entirely depends on whether I was referring to comments he made that were in the past, in which case "was" is correct, or his ongoing views, in which case he is right. I might have got it right, were I able to understand whether he was merely a victim of excessive consumption of his latest order from Laithwaite's, or whether he really believes much of what he drivels on about.

You really are bad at grammar. "Was" would still be incorrect, even if you had been referring to statements in the past. You're going to get a detention if you make a third mistake.

............and, for the avoidance of doubt, I believe everything about which I drivel on. (Note that, unlike you, I didn't end my sentence with a preposition). In fact, that's your third error - detention boy!!!!

Seriously, I am my biggest fan........ and it's a seriously small club.
