So we don't need to know the people, or share any common  values to be a community ?

Its a pretty meaningless grouping then don't you think ?

That would make my community really small😉

It would be a bit pointless if nobody in the community shared common interests, values or knew eachother personally I guess. However most communities do have people who share common interests, values and know others personally…just like this forum community and the boating community.

If you had a community where nobody liked anyone else, that would be a bit weird too. So friendship is pretty important to keeping any community going. We’re not all friends, but it doesn’t stop the community from functioning.

Sounds like a fairly random group of people to me ... I think the 'community' is a fiction to make one feel cosy.

Further evidence of how we're all different perhaps.

No, communities are real/fact, not fiction. I think most people enjoy the sense of belonging to a community, but I guess some don’t and prefer to be on their own.

Real and a fact ... but not necessary to know each other, share any values, be considerate to each other, or agree if such a thing as 'community' exists.

A bit abstract don't you think ?

So you community people,  can I ask if the community includes ...

Those boaters who shout abuse as you pass

Those who run generators or engines at all times of the day and night

Those who moor on lock landings, water points and other inappropriate locations

Those who never move and litter the towpath with their 'possessions'

Or is the community those we like only ?

You missed off the angry members of the NBTA who have no love for boats, boating or canals, who hate CRT and whose main reason for being here at all is for sticking it to the man.

Are they members of Bassplayer's boating community too, one finds oneself wondering?

No, I'm not a member of the NBTA community, but I feel I belong to the boating community as a whole...warts and all.

I certainly don't feel part of the same community as the NBTA and supporters, whose actions in their own selfish interests have been detrimental to most other boaters and the canals in general, and which are likely to trigger CRT rule changes that almost *nobody* will like... 😞

Maybe it's like a Venn diagram, with lots of little subcommunities all meeting in the small chunk in the middle where we play with boats.

I have always thought that that road leads to "community leaders", who speak only for their particular subset but claim to have the authority of all, and are usually the ones that fit current establishment thinking, while the leaders of other subsets get shouted down and ignored.

About the only thing the entire boating community could agree on is that we want water under our boats.

I was going to say, "Aye, and no stoppages,"  but then I realised some like stoppages, as then they don't have to move.

I bet there are still a few who would say "not fussed about that"!

Mainly NBTA CMer types.

I think they encompass the tightest knit community  often seen bunched together

Anyway I'm with Groucho, and most certainly wouldn't want to join any community that would consider me as a suitable member.

I never thought this site would be so full of communists... even if some members have got their Marxes muddled up.

Is there such a thing as Society though Arthur 😂

All depends what a community is and how you term it.

. When we broke down years ago we saw the boating community at its best. Two boats full of all sorts of stuff on cabin tops came 400yards down to help tow us up to their safe moorings. I saw no Gongoozlers offer help or nearby householders. We couldn’t be more grateful to those guys who could have just sipped another Stella off the roof smoked another spliff and told us to call RCR. That to my mind made a boating community. They understood what we were going through and helped, gawd bless em and their country and Western  at full volume till 2am
