If it contains a balanced mix of boaters from different areas and with differing needs then yes but if the mix is not great then no.

Some folks like adding this sort of thing to their CV makes them think they are superior- there are one or two I can immediately think of who'd jump at the chance to add another 'committee' to their existing roles on BSS, IwA etc groups.

Of  course you could actually try looking at the application form that's quite clear they are looking for cross-section of folks and they ask lots of questions to determine your background/boat use. It would seem they (whoever 'they' are) will select a representative cross section of applicants  to join the panel. 

So instead of moaning bloody well apply.... then moan when we see who has been "selected"

I think you miss the point of the moaning. The outcome of a piece of research is most easily manipulated by careful selection of the people used as subjects for said research. For example the same research would probably have a different outcome is applied to 50 NBTA members compared to 50 IWA members, don't you think? 

 

So now is the time to be making a fuss about who gets selected. Not afterwards!
