We are Humans, I always thought man (in this type of context) is the shortened form of that, or is it to be renamed Hupersons or Hupeople ?

Only because men decided it should be so, same as they decided God should be always referred to as a he. The Jewish one, anyway, dunno about all the others, they'remore of a mixed bag.

If it was the shortened form of human, rather than gendered, we would surely be Hums. Anyway, this debate, if it was worth bothering with, which it isn't, doesn't belong anywhere but the barmpot, sorry, current affairs, bit.

I still think if you want to use the word batsman, you've got to have ballsman and fieldsman. Once every sane person had decided batswoman was silly, and it was daft calling them batsmen,  it was also obvious that just using batter for the women (rather a strange phrase, now I think on, with the fish and chips thread elsewhere) was odd.

I've not watched much women's cricket though, and anyway I try to tune out the commentators' inane wittering as much as possible, but I do rather wonder if they have a field position as deep third woman, or what they use instead.

I've an idea it is God's fault. 

 

According to some old book or other He created man in his own image, and given he is a bloke, so was the first, erm, man. 

 

And then something a bit fishy went on with the bod's ribs and a woman was thereby created too. Or something along those lines.

It’s not the same thick fish  batter on chips, it seems to be a West Midlands thing.  Gives chips a lovely flavour, and an orange colour (paprika I think?)  . Best I can recommend is at Compton by the bridge just down from Compton lock. I’m not actually sure they do them without.

There's also a fantastic off-license just round the corner, where you can get all sorts of delicious beers to drink with/after your chips... 🙂

I can understand 'manning the tiller' but that is due to old phrases. As a few have mentioned though, I do kind of agree that language maybe needs to move on a little, how i dont know. 

Driving to me feels weird, as I think of cars etc not a boat. 

Steering doesn't feel like you're really controlling the boat, just its direction.

When I sailed off shore some of the boats had tiller steering some wheel steering.

It was always helmsman or helm regardless of the equipment, i.e. "could you take the helm please, course to steer (whatever it was.)

 

Never got called a "wheelman!"
