Mooring at Tesco near Hawkesbury Junction

I'm looking for grocery stores near the canal for a vacation next month. I'll be starting at Rose Narrowboats few miles from Hawkesbury Junction and heading to the Ashby. I noticed a Tesco right on the Coventry a short distance south of the Junction but on the satellite view didn't see any boats moored nearby. Is it allowed?

 

Other food supply suggestions are welcome. I'll only be out for a week and mainly need breakfast, lunch and snacks. Still hoping to visit pubs and restaurants for dinners even though a few of past recommendations (Globe and Dog and Hedgehog for example) are now closed.

Don't Rose arrange to do a grocery order in advance?
Otherwise, why not buy stuff on your way to pick the boat up?

I didn't find any handy moorings for the Coventry Tesco which is on the offside and a long walk round.  Once on the Ashby Hinkley has some local shops perhaps half a mile from the canal, and larger supermarkets somewhat further.

 

Closer to the canal there are a few farm shops usually selling bread/bacon/eggs/sausages/veg and so on. 

 

Rose will accept supermarket deliveries on the day your trip starts:

Groceries
You can arrange with most supermarkets to have your groceries delivered to our boatyard on the day you are scheduled to collect your boat.
If you are cruising South there is a Co-op store in 1.5 hours by boat and a Tesco store in 2 hours time.
There are no shop facilities going North within a short distance of our base.

A little more info might help. I'm flying in from California and will have no car. Delivery is an option but I tend to browse and have no idea what will be available, particularly heat and serve kinds of things. Also, my experience here with ordering on-line is not great. Produce in particular is hard get right. I'll also be alone and don't really feel like doing actual cooking on my holiday if I can avoid it. :-)

 

I'll be in Rugby the night before and there are stores a mile away, so that's a possibility. And there is a Tesco Express in the same building as my hotel.

Many don’t; a few do, including Rose Narrowboats and Norbury.

With Atherstone shut I would say there is a good chance of keeping the main pound full enough for hire boats. It’s a fair distance to take in the bottom of Hillmorton, Coventry Basin, the top of Atherstone and all of the Ashby.

In that case I'd suggest pubs are usually your best bet for avoiding cooking. Pubs here often do breakfast as well as evening food.  

 

I'm not sure I've noticed too many pubs on your route but I may have been cruising with my eyes shut. Maybe someone can post a list...

On the Ashby Canal there's The Corner House pub just a couple of hundred yards south from Bridge 5, and a Spar mini-market about a mile away in the opposite direction. There are moorings (with rings) just before Bridge 5. The Corner House is a Marston's chain pub so nothing special, but it's food and drink.

 

There's a water point and moorings just before Bridge 15, where you'll also find The Lime Kilns pub which gets good reviews. There's a Brewer's Fayre pub just north of Bridge 17 (next door to the marina) but that, along with all the other pubs in the same chain, may be closed down when you visit.

 

There are moorings just before Bridge 25, where you'll find Spinneybank Farm Shop alongside the canal (I got a very tasty pork pie from there that was a meal in itself), and you can also walk up to the nice quiet village of Stoke Golding from there where you'll find the George & Dragon pub, which has its own brewery and serves very nice meals at lunchtime apparently. There's also a newsagent and general store that seemed to sell a bit of everything.

 

I've not been beyond Shenton but Market Bosworth is a fair size market town so should have pubs, cafes or shops where you can buy food.

 

But, before all that, there's The Greyhound at Hawkesbury Junction!

Last time we were up the Ashby we used the Lime Kilns at bridge 15. and The Globe at Snarestone.  T'was a few years ago though.  We popped down to Lodge Farm Shop at Snarestone as well to restock.

I don’t recall the George and dragon doing food - their website suggests it does but only at lunchtime. 
 

The pub scene in market bosworth isn’t great if I remember correctly, the Dixie arms is probably the best bet. The Horse and Jockey and the rising sun at congerstone / shackerstone are both decent. 
 

I’ve never been to the globe  at snare stone but looks like it might be nice?

The smell of freshly cooking bacon for breakfast with whatever else is on offer is one of the joys of boating? Judging by the number of boats we pass with the same aroma suggests that is a common experience. 

There’s a few standard foods/ meals  needing minimal effort too. But yes expecting an advocado to be perfectly ripe is expecting too much, unless you like cutting into cannonballs that is. It may be edible by the end of the week.

A one mile walk from the moorings outside the marina at Market Bosworth takes you to the town centre where there is a Co-op food store amongst other things. One the way there you also pass a fish and chip shop but check opening hours to avoid disappointment.

 

At Hawkesbury Junction The Greyhound is not to be missed. Rather less obvious is that there is a small shop about 5 minutes walk away in one of the back streets, good for bread, milk and other stuff if desperate. There is also a Co-op almost exactly a 1 mile walk from the junction.

For breakfast without doubt on the Ashby is Sutton Wharf and if you go into Coventry Playwrights Cafe, both canal side

Tesco have a whole site devoted to on line food items. Simply download the app, set up an account and browse their range at your leasure. Once you decide what you want select a delivery time/date, order the items, pay and forget. Non availability is not often an issue but very occasionally their substitutions can cause a smile.

The OP did also say they didn’t do online shopping as they like to see goods and didn’t have a great experience with online ordering. 😂 Must say I’m with them on that.

We had that the other day, lady in front had a huge trolley full, when she paid she used our card fot the points

Just going back to the original post , there isn't  a Tesco near Hawkesbury Junction, its quite a way down the Coventry arm

The Globe changed hands and stopped doing food for a while but the restaurant has now reopened and back to its usual high standards.
