Yet another breach on the Llangollen Canal

Just watched Taylor's Aboard video of the latest breach at Swanley.

Was there any over dramatisation as their YouTube channel is generally full of it.

Looks bad, but not catastrophic. Gonna effect water  flow down Llangollen to shroppie, again.

They haven't far to go by car, moored at Shebdon on the Shroppie on the 2 day VM's.

Looks like an old oak tree has fallen, but away from the canal and its roots have pulled out a hole in the canal bed as it fell.

It's not necessarily the teachers' faults, more a consequence of the perverse consequences of  performance management and the "targets" culture. 

 

When my son was a teacher in a Lonon East End senior comprehensive school, he was specifically instructed not to correct too many spelling mistakes, as pages covered with red ink would not look good on an OFSTED visit. His protest that not correcting spelling errors would mean that pupils completing things like job application forms  would mean them ending up in the waste paper bin, cut no ice.

 

It was one of the reasons why he gave up teaching after 3 years and became a chartered accountant.

I had a school biology teacher who would delight in covering your work with red pen comments, then mark it down for being untidy!

I expect they will have to get pumps installed here quickly, like at Whitchurch, especially with the drought, to keep Hurleston reservoir and Crewe supplied with water.

Becoming an accountant still means using a lot of red ink. Maybe that's just my accountant. 😀

We are in the middle of the two breach sites. The tree fell after, not before.

Except that it has the opposite meaning (well, almost) - Fixing the breach will effect water flow down the canal. Bonus points for affect as a noun though.

IIRC, wasn't there something mooted a long while ago for students, something like spelling it as it sounds, disregarding any mistakes or meaning in the word ?

For effect to be used as a verb in this instance would mean it would improve water flow. As this occurence has had the opposite effect, affect is the correct word.

Only on this forum could a conversation about another canal breach to be taken over by a pointless discussion about grammar and teaching standards.

 

Sometimes I think it's not surprising that CRT think boaters are a bunch of moaning minnies.

I'm surprised you hadn't already worked it out, its not difficult!

 

Not everyone has an eye for detail though. Witness the number of posts on here where people state their battery capacities in kW, or even worse, Amps/hour.

Also Hurleston Reservoir - that's going to be the big issue as it's the water supply for Nantwich and Crewe.

 

It does look like they've already put a temporary repair in place though, hopefully it will hold.
