You should try walking along the London canals instead of speculating from the far frozen North -- lots of these buyers and boats still around, maybe even more than last year... 😉

Maybe you should try getting out on the canals, instead of walking and cycling them.

 I seen loads of boats being moved to London so opportunists could make money, most were wrecks that’s why they got them so cheap.
 How do you know how many times these boats have been passed on to people?  
 Looking at social media it looks quite common that people have these boats for a short period, then sell the dream to another young person looking for cheap accommodation.

 Ah the frozen North, where your boat is parked up and you’re spending £1000’s on it, for it then to be road moved back to your marina, to sit for another year with you staring at your phone monitoring it’s little blue boxes from the big smoke.😉

I'd say with this phrase you have encapsulated the whole basis of the western free market capitalist economy responsible for the wealth we all enjoy here in the western world.

All I can say is that there are more boats along the GU than I've ever seen before, and many of them look like "London boats". They may have the same deluded yoof on or new ones, but they are there -- and are certainly not visible from where you are.

 

I do wish you wouldn't turn every post into a mud-slinging contest, it's getting really tedious. So I won't reply in kind, pigs and mud wrestling etc... 😉

You always start it with your little dig posts, hoping for reactions 
and of course not visible from where I am up North. I’m just looking at boats costing over £300K that have failed and are being repaired.😉

Have you looked at it or used it in the last 12 months?  No? Sell it or throw it.

Could you replace it for not very much money if you needed to?  Yes? Sell it or throw it.

Has it been waiting a long time for a repair?  SIOTI.

Was it crucial to your previous pastimes but not to your likely future ones? SIOTI.

Is it particularly bulky for the benefit it brings? (Trombones excepted).  SIOTI.

Is it a painting of doubtful quality and authorship?  Sell it via the BBC for a stupidly high price.

Does it bring back memories?  Keep the best ones/bits and lose the rest.

Is it a tiny piece that you have completely forgotten the purpose of?  KEEP IT, on the understanding that you will still not find out what it is for until you can no longer locate it.

Does it belong to someone else?  Send it to them as soon as possible.  Don't delay.

Is of historical interest, an old Lister, etc?  Advertise it.

Is it of high value?  Tell me where you keep it.

Sweeping generalisations aren't always helpful. I live in "the North"... in zone 9 for horticulture because I'm on the West coast, so we rarely get frost. When I lived much further South, further inland, there were hard frosts and black ice on roads and pavements.

 

The thread seems to have deviated completely from the original question, so I'll bow out and say thank you, sincerely, to everyone who shared thoughts and experiences. It's given me lots to think about.

They do that. Most of the answers to the original question were given fairly early, then someone says something a bit off topic and it veers.  Best thing to do is when you get nearer the time you want an answer to a specific question, start a new thread, read the first answers and stop bothering with it after the second page, or treat whatever happens after that as a general conversation.
