noddyboater Posted July 28 Report Posted July 28 Look into the crystal ball.. Do you see it? Staff are unwell, the lock must close.. What a Joke. It's finally working again so now they can't get staff to operate it.
Hudds Lad Posted July 28 Report Posted July 28 Impressive how they know in advance when they're going to be ill
Popular Post Momac Posted July 28 Popular Post Report Posted July 28 I think this is genuinely someone has unexpectedly off work due to illness and they have presumably not expecting to be back for a month. You can't send any random employee to operate the tidal locks and manage boat movements. Each tidal lock has its own requirements. So I expect that explains the gaps in service . Whoever the person is that has gone off sick I wish them a speedy recovery. 6

Your concern for the member of staff is truly touching, I'm happy to contribute to a whip round for flowers, grapes etc. Or maybe CRT should reimburse me for the money I pay them annually, either my commercial licence or personal one? My point was that the lock has been virtually closed for over 2 months, and now more closures are pre-planned in August, over weekends. I can count at least 6 keepers that work the 4 tidal locks, surely with this much notice cover can be arranged? Like it would be in a normal business for instance. 1

I would not know how many lock keepers are suitably trained and available for the tidal locks. But certainly one full time lock keeper passed away recently and now another is off sick. There is also a C&RT regional split with Cromwell/Torksey in one region and Stockwith/Keadby in another. And of course people do not usually work 7 days a week and are entitled to holidays . Volunteers are being used on the tidal locks. C&RT are asking for people to volunteer for training at Keadby. I understand , at present, no volunteers are Keadby trained. https://volunteer.canalrivertrust.org.uk/opportunities/118461-volunteer-lock-keeper-keadby-lock-2026-06-23 1
