They are a hindrance when dealing with anything more difficult than weed or a bit of rope.  They do not deal with pipe fenders, blankets, mattresses or shopping trolleys.

 

You always have to watch out for them attacking if you are diving the hatch for any reason.

I have one. It was already fitted to the boat when I bought it 

 

At first I was sceptical but I've had the boat for 12 years now and only been down the weed hatch in anger twice, despite a few cruises on lesser used parts of the BCN.

 

The first time was soon after I got the boat. The engine note slowed, I lost steering and black smoke poured from the exhaust. Classic signs of a heavy prop foul.

 

I limped to the bank, tied up and went down the weed hatch to find nothing. The Prop Protector had obviously managed to deal with it.

 

The second time I got a discarded cratch cover wrapped around the prop which took me a couple of hours to remove. I don't think anything would have dealt with that except human intervention.
