Whats the story with the Memory Lane Wharf moorings in Leicester, can't find much info about them. Whenever anyone asks about city centre moorings, only Castle Gardens and Friars Mill get mentioned. They seem to have been there around 10 years, but mothballed? Going to a concert at Abbey Park and thought they'd be ideal, so went for a look in the car yesterday. Was like Fort Knox, couldn't get near, everywhere locked up. Big, thick black fences all around with padlocked gates. There were 7 post boxes on a fence, but no boats there at all. I'd read there was supposed to be 7 residential and some 48hr visitor moorings, but it still all looks  new and totally unused.

Did think of mooring up over a Saturday night, who'd know? But the tow path is on the Abbey Park side and there didn't appear to be anyway to get out of the pontoon to find a bridge to access the park.

Anyone know what's happening?

as close as I could get.

As an alternative to my current plans.....does anyone have any ideas on where there are any decent 7 day moorings (not 24hrs), before Leics Castle Gardens approaching from the south?

Cheers.

If the weather is OK, Birstall moorings or above Thurmaston lock are ok. Beyond that, the moorings by the Hopeless Wanchor are good and fairly flood resistant other than in major flood times and still manageable at those times.

My suggestion is book a slot at Friars Lane, pay for any extra for peace of mind...if the river goes into flood you can't get charged for an overstay.

Thanks, but we'll be approaching from Kilby Bridge, so not wanting to go as far as Thurmaston. Plan is to get to Friars Mill for 48 hrs then turn somewhere nearby (Memory Lane?) and go back south. Was looking for somewhere close to Leics ( between Kilby and Friars) to spend the 4 days prior to that, rather not spend £25 per extra night at Friars. Cheers

I would not normally moor in Summer between Kilby Bridge and the City...I have done...late on..several times, but only when staying on board ..I would not leave it unattended.

To be perfectly honest, stop at Kilby, move to the Kings Mile Castle Gardens moorings for a couple of days and then move to the Friars Mill moorings. After your concert move to the Memory lane moorings ...you might not be able to exit but that means they are safe....and then turn back.
