Dear Abby,

I've just counted 49 cup hooks in use in my boat. I am still finding more. Used for all sorts of things, including holding kitchen implements, curtain tie backs, porthole bung rods, even the anchor. None are used to hold cups, or mugs. I have a pack of unused hooks in the tool box, ready to add. Is this normal?

Hello. My name is Jen, and I have a cup hook addiction...

Someone gave me a free pack when I first started boating and suggested they could be useful. Now, every spare penny goes to B&Q. It was so easy to slide in to my present abject state. I didn't even realise I had a problem. Be warned!

Dear Jen

No, it is not normal.  Very few people have this hangup.  But, be brave, whilst it cannot be cured, it can be bourn.  It may be helpfulI to hook up with other people who have the same problem.  Be aware that the ownership of 49+ cup hooks is not the major problem, knowing how exactly many there are, is.  Place them where it is easy to lose track of where you start to count.  When acquiring new hooks, try to buy ones that are smaller than any you already have, in this way your problem will gradually reduce in intensity.  Avoid areas where volcanic activity could produce violent uplift combined with horizontal movement or your universe may end up on the floor.  If you find yourself surreptitiously purloining other people's cup hooks please PM me for discrete help.

I’ll have to introduce you to my mother. We have enough mugs and cups to enable 27 people to be on board and all drinking out of a clean one at the same time.

The boat sleeps a maximum of 4.

Do you need use of my cup hook tool, I got a set of screwdriver bits from MAC tools and there was an odd U shaped bit in the set, asked MAC and they said it was for screwing in cup hooks.

Ive got a vintage bit and brace which would do the job even faster.

I don't have many cup hooks but I do have one of those cup hook bits for my screwdriver.

When we shared a boat, one of the owners had a brass cup hook fetish 🙂 I often tried to count how many there were but never got the sae answer twice. I am sure there were well over 100 !

Perhaps one of the owners of that boat could confirm the current number ?

They are coat hooks not cup hooks, sorry you are eliminated

Have you tried mug trees yet - once you've done mug trees, you'll look back on cup hooks as merely the gateway.  Beware of the middle of lidl. You'll leave with not just mug trees, but many other potential useful items to fill your draws with. The assorted sized heat shrink tubes are such a thing.

"Even the anchor!"

I'm impressed - please supply photo(s).

It's a generic Danforth style anchor. The weight is taken by the floor, but the shackle attached to the stem fits over a cup hook to stop the stem falling over.

Now I have mentioned anchors, watch the thread derail in to the pros and cons of different types and the uselessness of Danforth ones!

They are very useful as decorative ornaments, and, can even give the boater a false sense of security.

That would be the Canforth cup hook.  The tip folds up to minimise space usage but it can only hold lightweight cups even when fully extended.  No Denby.

Now this sounds like real trouble.

How do you polish them all? It must be very fiddly, and then to have to re-lacquer each one...

Two cup hooks tied back to back with some whipping cord might make a good anchor . I know a chap who thought he could repair a motorbike chain with a paperclip
