Looking for tips to fix a (very minor) oil leak on my DM2. It's from a compression fitting on the copper tube running from oil pump to oil filter; normally I'd just remake the joint with a new olive, but removing this particular tube would require quite a lot of other dismantling because it's a short/straight run. I could just about get enough access to wrap some PTFE tape around the existing olive; is it appropriate to use PTFE tape (or an alternative) with oil?

 

In case it's relevant, oil pressure is around 60psi. I've already tried tightening up the fitting on the existing olive. Leak is sufficient to make a mess in my lovely clean bilge, but otherwise insignificant.

Not knowing how short the pipe run is, or what else is around it; would it be possible to form a loop of pipe that could be sprung in to position to replace the leaking one with new olives and no other dismurglifying?

Thanks both! I'll try Heldite first, but if that doesn't work a loop should be a good backup option.

Why not consider belt and braces?

A wrap of ptfe and Heldite. It ften worked for me with oil boilers when preformed pipework failed 0n obsolete burners. Pressure was always above 100 psi, often 175 psi.

I spent my later life as a Classic, Vintage and Veteran motorcycle restorer. 

 

As most will know, oil leaks on British motorcycles were their trademark.

 

Loctite 'Hydraulic Sealant' - several types are offered if you google it - was a gamechanger.

Much of our engine is put together with Wellseal, mainly because it works for oil, water and fuel so only the one tube needed. It is also apparently mildly carcinogenic, so it must be good!
