that would be a shame.

your first post has invited much interesting discussion, and whilst your reasons are your own, the historic boats thread is very interesting, and rarely, not argumentative!

We do get them,  don't we.

No doubt this will lead to an endless whinge of "why won't you let me leave", when you could just delete your bookmark and never be heard of again, whoever you are... Though I could make a fair old guess.

Then, if course, they come back under a different name as soon as they want some advice they just might be prepared to listen to...

It does seem a little odd not finding the forum "useful or suitable".  Their only obvious interaction has been a good topic in an interesting part of the forum which has produced good replies.

I do think this idea that deleting an account will suddenly give a person their privacy back is a bit naive. Even by logging on to the web in the first place you've donated a stack of information to umpteen unknown data foragers. And if you've ever used any of the "smart" devices that work when you talk to them, then you've cheerfully given up any rights to privacy at all.

It just seems like grandstanding to me. It's easy enough to contact the moderating team privately, no need to make a big announcement.

But what does deleting an account mean?

The members name can easily be removed from the accessible list of members, and a placeholder name used on any of their posts. But if a member's contributions are removed, then threads to which they have contributed may not make sense, yet others who have contributed to that thread may want their contributions to remain. And what about where the deleted poster has been quoted? As far as I can see the forum software quotes the users name as plain text (which doesn't update if the user changes their forum name or is deleted). How can the forum effectively address that situation?

I think the position is vacant at the moment!

I think you are right. The thread the OP started is actually very informative, interesting and civil, so it is somewhat of a mystery to me why they want themselves erased.
