Bugsworth basin and diesel prices

Wife and I did the Steel Cotton Rail trail yesterday from Chinley to Marple. Lovely walk with loads of canal action through Bugsworth Basin and along Peak Forest. Bugsworth was a pleasure as always apart from the closed down Navigation pub. This place always seemed busy but looks like it’s been gone for a while, sad times. Trump’s antics are in full storm at Furnace Vale marina, diesel was £1.71!! Glad we have a full tank from Norbury Wharf at almost half that price.

We're in Bugsworth at the moment so you must have either gone past us or followed us. 

 

There's a sign at the end saying the Bugsworth war memorial club is open and accepts visitors so we might try that for a beer tonight. 

 

We filled up at Turners on the way up and it was even 1.38 there, he said it was still going up ☹️

Fuel boat Alton / Bollington Wharf is £1.49, Lyme View Marina is £1.49 and Bailey's at Higher Poynton is £1.42. Didn't ask what New Mills Marina was but they are normally expensive anyway.

The price of diesel on the world market is fluctuating. If a retailer has bought at the height of the crisis, he has little option but to pass that on to the boater, alternatively he could do what Starmer suggests and sell it at the price if a litre of milk!

Of course that’s true , but some places have always fleeced us on diesel prices( Sherborne in Brum, Great Haywood etc. While others like Norbury and Talbot Wharves, some fuel boats, have been much cheaper- as is happening now.

At Hartford on the Great Ouse it is £1.96, 60/40 only. Us moorers get 10% off.

 

The Great Ouse has always been expensive. I first came here in 2008 and was a bit surprised to pay £1.00 a litre having been paying been paying almost half that on the canals. Little Ouse Moorings did break ranks when they started selling diesel but they are no more.

Buckden were quite reasonable when I took a couple of widebeams for a fill up there - (might have changed since as it was quite a few weeks ago)

I don’t get how the marina can dictate what split you have. It’s you making the declaration not the marina 

Paid £1.34 at North Kilworth marina this morning (domestic rate). That price has actually come down 10p a litre since a few weeks ago

It’s been discussed before and it seems to be legitimate to do. A good reason to buy diesel elsewhere!

True, but any business is entitled to set whatever conditions it likes for it doing business with you, and in this case that condition is that you declare 60/40 split. 

 

If you are not willing to accept this retailer's condition(s) of business you are free to walk away (cruise away) and buy from another retailer.

They can't. But they can refuse your custom if you don't accept the split(s) they offer.

Buying elsewhere is not practical in the winter months as the river is usually in flood. However the 10% discount is much the same as a domestic rate.

Some  retailers do dictate the split. I know of at least two. One is a coastal harbour at least 40 miles from any other harbour so if you arrive there by boat and will be leaving by boat how could you possibly claim full domestic rate? So its 60/40 take it or leave it.

One marina I know inland was audited by HMRC and I suspect they may have had some grief over the amount they were selling at full domestic rate they also will only sell at 60/40 if the fuel is going in a boat.

So the retailer doesn't have to accept a customer declaration.

Absolutely, just as a publican can refuse to sell beer to anyone he chooses, and a shop dictates the price of goods on sale, so the retailer can elect to dictate the split, if you can go to a garage and buy some at 20%, or travel to another boatyard to get 20%, so be it.

If you genuinely using 20% for propulsion, you may be able to find someone selling at 0% to balance your books, but i guess most retailers think you are taking the piss if you arrive by boat.

A marina on the T&M near to Fradley Junction has a delivery about every 2 months and has always sold their fuel at the price they'd paid for the delivery (plus their mark up obviously) and that price always remained until their next delivery. They had a delivery at the 'old price' just before the huge rises, but only 2 weeks after that delivery they increased the price by 36p a litre.

 

That's greed and exploitation in my opinion, but being as they are owned by a hedge fund I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

It's one of the drawbacks of living in a western, free enterprise economy. 

 

The alternative is a communist style "Command economy", where prices are dictated by central government. And I think most of us can guess what the effect would be of instructing the marina what price to sell diesel for....
