A 70ft crane boat was used to assist the removal of pump equipment at Beeston Iron Lock on Saturday. Does anybody known the identity of this craft, it looks like a former BW boat

Presumably the River Class butty Aye.

Or perhaps Wey.

One would assume so, but as Heartland has not provided a picture of or any other information about the particular boat in question we can only guess!

Rothen's have a very large number of maintenance boats, mainly more modern, but several of them "historics".

Wey (edit too add - probaably not Wey, but Aye) is a great piece of kit/toy

Always fancied a boat with a Hiab. Not sure what for exactly - for fun I suppose.

Would certainly make mooring wherever you like quick and easy. Just drop the bucket onto the canal bed!

Back in my WRGie days we always joked about going on a holiday on the WRG dredger, so we could get ourselves through the lesser used parts of the BCN.  But the dredger project never got beyond a diesel engine, an excavator arm and a few other bits set aside in a corner of the workshop at Droitwich.

The image of the boat was uploaded on the Kieren & Lottie U Tube which makes it difficult to reproduce, but is identical to the images show on the Rothen website

It looks like a River Class

And David Mack has included the correct image above so which one was it? Any ideas

Thanks

The Ayes have it as they say

But because of copy write concerns it is unable to reproduce some images now on this site.

Sad

A few years ago I did seriously investigate spud legs as an option. Great for a workboat, but surprisingly impractical for a pleasure boat.

Back in the 80s I recall the Fuller twins at Stone fitted Hiab style hydraulic arms to their narrow boats.
Martin's boat The Anne
Roger's boat The Elstree

I believe this was part of their company "Five Towns Carrying"
They had constructed a form of steel railing along both boats' gunnels in order to manoeuvre the contraptions up and down the length of the holds.

If I remember correctly (which I rarely do these days) stability was an interesting experience to be enjoyed by onlookers and operator alike.
