Hello everyone, I encountered a concerning issue earlier today, I tried to change my car insurance over to my marina address.

It is a residential mooring, I am even getting my driving licence changed to that address.... So full residential.

I was told that my insurer would not cover me as they do not cover those who live on 'houseboats.'

Is it this just my insurer or have any of you permanent residential mooring holders with a car had the same issue?

Just for info' it was Policy Expert that said no to me due to living on a boat.

Its an enduring problem when living aboard. Have a search, there are plenty of threads here about it.

I think the bottom line is you need to use an old fashioned insurance broker who can bypass all the on-line comparison sites and get offers for you direct from underwriters.

Here is an example old thread discussing the same thing:

Policy Expert are cheap but very rigid. I have used them.  Adrian Flux specialise in less usual circumstances.  I have used them too.

Edited to say that I wouldn't have just stuck with Policy Expert anyway - they put up my car insurance by £130 this year.  I saved twice that by shopping round.

Car insurers have very clear ideas as to which market they want to work in. It's a business decision and they will either price out that business or simply refuse to quote. They will also have a huge amount of data based on past claims. Interestingly, one company may decline to quote but another will even though they are owned by the same parent company!

Not sure they still exist but an independent insurer broker is the best bet and hopefully someone here can make a recommendation.

Under the Equality Act 2010, insurers cannot discriminate directly or indirectly on the basis of:

- Race

- Disability

- Religion or belief

- Gender

- Gender reassignment

- Sexual orientation

- Age (age can be used if justified by risk data)

- Pregnancy/maternity

- Marital status / civil partnership

However, for some reason they are allowed to discriminate and refuse to insure people on the basis of their type of residential accommodation.

If it was a non-residential/long term mooring I could understand, but in this case the OP has a proper residential mooring.

Surely all the others can be used too, if also justified by risk data.

If not, then why not? (Given that age can be.)

Memories...do some bloody forum searches before posting your silly YouTube style topics

I too was expecting to read about a major issue, and wondering what it was.

But it turned out to be a non-issue. I tried to help all the same.

Car insurance is a major thing.

I wanted up to date responses not stuff posted ages ago as tends to be the case on forums, a 🔝 c is talked about and discarded people have limited interest in continuing a topic for very long so forums are usually out of date unless you are lucky enough to catch a fresh one.

Address is a problem for anyone without a home address, but how do you get a bank card, or boat licence, its all the same problem.

I generally use my brothers address, he was not happy about this when I first asked, but its not been an issue, I limit the use of his address to parties who are not going to spam mail or sell details to data gatherers.

I use my GPs address for NHS, but insist that comms are sent to my Gmail address, so that has not been a problem. The NHS sends reminders by phone text.

If I need a new bank card, it can be sent to a bank, though these are not on every high street nowadays.

Picky or what?!!!!

Its an age old problem and older threads and responses are every bit as valid now as at the time they were posted.

Its still iksome that the thread title is so click-baity.

Yeah, I unfortunately do not have the luxury of an alternative. Plus the issuance would be void in an accident if your address is found to be different.

Click -batty

Well the more people click the more replies I have the more replies the more data the more data the higher likelyhood I will get the solution to the issue.

But it has to be said that on some rare occasions I do tend to get the occasional one that seems to be avers to modern communication methodology. BUT THERE'S ALWAYS ONE EH.

While this appears to be a major issue for you at the moment, as most boatowners do have a postal address it is not a major issue for many of us.  Therefore, as suggested, using a clearer title would have been considerate.  It may also have got you more useful replies.

I get the impression OP is demanding answers to her issues, this is not the way it works on here.

OP needs to think a bit deeper, could she be the only person to have found this to be a problem, unlikely.

Could it be that OP did absolutely no research before deciding that living on a boat was going to be cheap and easy, if that were the case the canals would be rammed.

I can't be bothered reading any more moaning posts. Have a nice day.

The canals are rammed, as are the gates, bridges, CRT CEO's wallet ,other boats and everything else.

Well yes, that is WHY its amusing!

Its only amusing because its so accurate.

Who was it who said analysing humour is like dissecting a frog?

Both die in the process....

Edit to add:

Goggle suggests it was E B White. Never heard of him!
