The ones I project managed for your favourite supermarket ran on syn gas derived from burning wood chip in a gasifier.

 

Back in the 70's - 90's I used to average 20 mins per mile and 10 mins per lock, but these days I seem to average 20 mins per mile plus 20 mins per lock, particularly in summer. The increased number of moored boats and longer lock queues at hot spots being the reason for slower progress.

 

As you saw CanalPlan AC is best for route planning these days.

 

If you really average 20mins per mile (3mph) on typical canals given the width/depth and number of moored boats (assuming you're a good boy and slow down past them!) you're doing exceptionally well... 😉 

 

(of course 3mph-3.5mph while cruising on a clear moored-boat-free canal is no problem, or even more on a wide/deep one like the big ones in West Yorkshire -- but that's not an *average*)

I can't remember the last time I saw an unbaffled gate paddle, they used to be very common, often shooting water halfway up the lock if opened before the level had risen to cover them and risking sinking your boat.

I suspect I do too -- but that's a stretch of canal where you can make reasonable progress, many are slower with more moored boats and narrow/shallow bits, especially further north.

 

I could also say that I averaged over 4mph on the big canals in West Yorkshire, wide and deep with very few moored boats to slow down for, but that's definitely not representative of the canals as a whole.

 

That's why what matters isn't what you can do one one stretch using mile markers or GPS, it's what you average over multiple trips on multiple canals, including anything that makes you slow down or stop. So far we have 3 independent figures like this, all of which are very close to 2.5 lock-miles per hour (miles+half number of locks)... 🙂

You should have seen the guy who overtook me near Priors Hardwick on Boxing Day; must have easily been doing 5 knots, with a bow wave and wake to match. Engine sounded and smelled like it was working quite hard, mind you...
