Gosh, did they really start one end and seventeen years later come out the other ? I suppose they built a few airholes from the bottom upwards, too ?? Where's BBC Verify when you need them?

The journalist probably had a previous career in retailing fruit & vegetable's.

No.  They started from both ends.  That's why there's a kink in the middle (well, not quite in the middle).  Still totally irrelevant to the main story, though.
