I have come across three separate ones so far, one says they are giving the cash to the local fire brigade to give to the boaters before Christmas, one is trying to raise a large sum for the boats that were lost and the other is a smallish one but  don't say how they will distribute it

So we've now got a guessing game. Which of these three appeals is genuine? "Give to Fire Brigade to give to boaters" definitely sounds dodgy.

It does confirm all the warnings up the thread, including mine.

Their insurance should cover the costs if adequately insured, but this could take time. The boats may of suffered little damage as they are base plate down and they are steel and don’t look twisted or battered, so their homes aren’t really lost/wrote off. I’m sure they’ll be recovered in time and damage assessments done. £28k divided by 3x boats is £9,333 each, strange figure. I suppose it will get them long term accommodation if needed and a decent wardrobe to wear.
The people that started this GoFundme are YouTubers with a lot of followers, a lot of which are clueless non boaters, a lot from abroad. So no wonder the fund has shot up with the description of the the loss of their homes and everything they own.

Anyone on here actually know the owners of any of the 3x affected boats?

Here’s their Vlog of the incident.

I think it started as £1200 target.  The targets on gofundme generally increase as the total rises, though I don't know if this is done manually by the person who set it up, or automatically.

Yes several of us on here know the owner of Sefton and have had communication since the incident.

Will be interesting how he gets his share of the money, hopefully his insurance company or CaRT have sorted accommodation out.

I've been involved with this for houses that have to be vacated in a hurry, not boats. Unlikely to be any problem with hotel accommodation and immediate living expenses.  The high media profile here should help. I can't imagine an insurer risking damage to their reputation with a poor response.

Hmm mm, I can imagine that there is a certain type of person who does not pay a sufficiently comprehensive insurance amd who complains loudly when their bluff is called.

This is not pointing at the boats involved, of course.

I'm a liveaboard boater and I dont know if all my expenses would be recovered to take me back to any pre incident status covering all costs. I would want my own boat recovered, my own housing costs covered, plus Fernando. I just can't be sure my insurance would pay everything.

In this incident it seemed the Local Authority stepped up to the plate.

Maybe check your insurance policy or ring your insurance company to give yourself peace of mind.

As long as they’re alright within themselves, that’s the main thing is boats and belongings can be replaced. Harder to fix humans.

I disagree. The NHS is free at the point of delivery. Whereas every boatyard charges lots of money.

But I think the caution on here is valid. You are presuming that money donated to this cause will be distributed appropriately. In this particular case I’m inclined to agree but in general, unfortunately the internet enables horrible people to exploit tragedy and in fact anyone could have set up that GFM page to scam people out of money.

There's an awful lot of people in need. You can't help them all, so you choose. Just because you can't (or don't want to) help ex servicemen doesn't mean you shouldn't support someone else in need.

Set one up if you really care, or is it just "whataboutery"?
