On the approach to Christmas 2025, it is time to exercise the Grey Cells and with a common thread in mind that will become evident on Christmas Eve

This one shows a modern view of a basin, seen from the towpath bridge, that was contracted to be built in 1840 and was finished by 1842. It had a specific purpose then and that was to receive coke

Since then there have been several transformations, but the heritage remains

St Nicholas presenting gifts to boats passing through Faulbach Lock on the Main about thirty years ago. On St Nicholas Day, the local Boatmen's Association gave gifts to all passing boats.

It is CHRIST MARCH as Slade Sings

My view is indeed Sheets Stores Basin and that is a modern view that links with the Erewash Canal

The Basin was constructed originally for Coke Traffic. The Midland Counties Railway like all other early railways had locomotives that burnt coke and the Midland Counties Railway was built to link Rugby with Leicester, Nottingham and Derby

It is mentioned in my new book the Great Railway Speculations Vol 1, Pen and Sword  p65-71 and coke traffic on page 94, just published.
