robtheplod Posted December 19, 2025 Report Posted December 19, 2025 Hi All, we're planning a short trip to Tixall wide over Christmas and just wondered are there any nice walks in the area? We've passed through but not stopped for any amount of time before.... thank you!! rob
Hudds Lad Posted December 19, 2025 Report Posted December 19, 2025 I'd guess the obvious is to walk on to Great Haywood then head down the towpath to Trentlane Bridge then cross the river on Essex Bridge and go enjoy Shugborough Hall. Might be a bit chilly for a paddle in the river where the Trent and Sow meet though 1
Rob-M Posted December 19, 2025 Report Posted December 19, 2025 There is a circular walk, if you go over Essex bridge and through the Shugborough estate on to the road you come back down to the canal at the bridge above Tixall lock. 2

There's a circular cruise too. More than enough room to loop the loop or do figures of eight as you boat through Tixall Wide! 1
Victor Vectis Posted December 19, 2025 Report Posted December 19, 2025 (edited) Norty! (but nice 😀 ) ETA Bramwith Junction ain't bad for that either. Edited December 19, 2025 by Victor Vectis
PCSB Posted December 19, 2025 Report Posted December 19, 2025 (edited) We were there at the begining of October this year, the Canada Geese were a blinking nuisance! Very nosiy all through the night, we moved on after a day. I hope you have much better luck than we did as it is such a lovely spot. I agree the walk to Shugbourough is very nice, also the Clifford Arms in Gt Haywood is very decent. Edited December 19, 2025 by PCSB speeling 1
robtheplod Posted December 29, 2025 Author Report Posted December 29, 2025 thanks for all the tips... having a lovely stay and very few boats... walk to shugborough hall is nice.... happy end of season cruise and the toilet test has been successful! quick note, is it 14 days mooring here in winter? 3
Ex Brummie Posted December 29, 2025 Report Posted December 29, 2025 I doubt if there are any spotters out during the extended Christmas holiday. Not much action at all in any public sector as CaRT considers itself to belong to. 1

As far as I recall, there's no restriction at all on the wide itself or there wasn't last time I was there. 1

Grassman Posted December 31, 2025 Report Posted December 31, 2025 All CRT 'non essential' staff are off for a fortnight over Christmas and return to work on January 5th. 1
