Sounds like good news. An increase in lottery funding following huge rises generally in capital project costs.

Is it really good news? Getting one off grants to restore might make the restoration people happy as it subsidises their hobby. But will they be able to keep it maintained properly from any revenue once it's 'reopened'? Or are they expecting CRT to take it on which is something they shouldn't do as they can't properly maintain what they currently have.

No, they do NOT have CRT down to take over, quite the opposite in fact.

Okay - the facts first, this canal will be managed by the Stroud Valleys Canal Company, a company limited by guarentee, it isn't going to CRT. and no funding body gives out millions of pounds without there being a funded maintenance plan in place for a given period of time, usually at least thirty years, so to get this money the SVCC will have had to provide such a plan. 

 

Now, the admin and politics - I know of no scheme where the expectation is that CRT will take it over on completion, even on CRT owned waterways! This happened up to the end of BW, principally Rochdale and Droitwich, although in realilty most completed restorations were on canals that were already BW, and they did have a period when they took over other waterways such as the Yorkshire Ouse. 

Finally, this is the 5th or 6th time I've posted the above about the Cotswolds...
