I’d think there will be a number of yards with similar problems currently - Northwich drydock on the weaver for one.

 

I wonder if business interruption insurance would cover your customers being unable to get to uou? (I know what the insurers would say, of course…)

Yes and their customers have had difficulty getting to them since January. It became virtually impossible when the canal breached near Ellesmere Port. I feel so sorry for Matt and Rebecca who have worked so hard to build up the dry dock business

With Tooleys, it is more probably a dig at CRT to suspend rental/ moorings charges to lessen the impact. There are a lot of boats on that pound which could keep the work coming in if they were creative about it. 

We have lost 3 blackings so far...but are working other bookings around who CAN get to us whilst we keep ongoing with paint jobs and other work.

Another historic boat, the Braithwaite and Kirk, horse-boat  Kilsby, is also at Tooleys.  It's due for a major restoration soon, but the plan is to move it by road.

By the way, I'm not sure what is meant in the article by "...we have decided to reinstate [the forecabin] as we know of no other historic boats still around with one."  I can think of several, including ours, Hampton.  I suppose it means there are no boats with an original forecabin.  Is this true?

If they think Hardy is possibly the only boat with a fore cabin they really have not done much research...

Context is everything, Shirley. I think they are very wooden boat-centric at Tooleys.

The fore cabin on HARDY was installed under the instruction of William Humphris to house two of his girls when he gave up towing a butty full time. Unfortunately I don't have any dates. The cabin was built in the hold area rather than the very front of the boat as FMC boats. Again I have no dates as to when it was removed.

Just look at the fore-end in that second picture. That is gorgeous! That's got to be at least a twelve foot swim back from the stem post.

 

Similarly IVY, with which I was sorely tempted a while back.

Personally, I'd go with that. For those of us stuck on the mud, being charged by CRT for the privilege is a bit thick.

How recently was that? Like most towns these days, Banbury seems to have plenty of vacant shops, including some in the shopping centre next to the yard. I'm no town planner, but I'd have thought that Tooley's adds more to the local ambience than another vape shop.

That was the original plan back in the 90s, I worked with the IWA and the planners on the scheme to keep Tooleys, which led to the current arrangement.

Indeed - I can't imagine the expenditure could be justified at the moment.
